Chapter 6

The winter chapel smelled like cedar and dust.
Nothing holy had happened there in years.
Nolan led me behind the old altar where a wooden panel had warped away from the stone wall. Inside was a narrow compartment.
Empty.
Almost.
A small music box remained.
Clara’s name was carved beneath it.
I picked it up.
Nolan stared.
“Mom gave her that.”
I opened it.
No music.
A voice.
Helena Bennett.
Recorded years ago.
“If Clara is hearing this, Arthur finally did what I was afraid he would do.”
I stopped breathing for half a second.
Helena continued.
“My husband does not love family. He loves obedience.”
Nolan looked away.
She spoke about Arthur’s eight sons.
How he raised them against one another.
How he gave affection as reward and silence as punishment.
How every child learned that being useful was safer than being loved.
Then she spoke about Clara.
“She is different because she learned early that leaving a room does not mean losing yourself.”
I listened.
Helena knew Arthur would eventually try to use Clara in an alliance.
A marriage.
A child.
Whatever form gave him more control.
So she taught her daughter one rule.
If Arthur ever calls your child the future of Bennett, leave immediately.
My jaw tightened.
Arthur had used those exact words.
Helena had predicted it years before.
The recording continued.
“There is something else Clara must know. Arthur’s sons are not his legacy. He believes none of them are strong enough.”
Nolan stared at the floor.
“He intends to use the first grandchild he can control.”
There it was.
Not just desperation.
Not only my freight routes.
Arthur had been waiting for a child.
Any child carrying Bennett blood.
Clara’s pregnancy gave him one.
Helena’s voice lowered.
“If Clara is pregnant when this happens, Arthur will try to separate her from the father. He will call it protection. He will say the child needs Bennett discipline.”
I closed my eyes.
Everything Arthur had done fit the recording perfectly.
Then Helena added one final warning.
“If he fails to control the mother, he will turn the brothers against her.”
Nolan started crying quietly.
I looked at him.
“Did he?”
Nolan nodded.
“Years ago.”

The eight brothers had not only attacked Clara together.
Arthur had been preparing them to see their sister as a threat long before I ever met her.
