Chapter 7

Nolan talked on the drive back.

Once he started, years came out at once.

Arthur told his sons Clara thought she was better than them.

That Helena filled her head with weakness.

That Clara would eventually marry outside the family and try to take Bennett influence with her.

None of it was true.

But children raised inside one version of a story eventually stop asking who wrote it.

“Why did you laugh outside the ICU?” I asked.

That hurt him.

Good.

“I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

He wiped his face.

“Because everyone else did.”

There it was.

The simplest form of cowardice.

I did not absolve him.

I understood it.

Those are different things.

When we returned to the hospital, Clara was still unconscious.

Antonio had news.

The message she tried to send him had another unsaved fragment.

MOM KNEW.

I put Helena’s music box beside Clara’s bed.

Then I sat with her.

“I know now.”

No response.

“I should have known sooner.”

Nothing.

I touched the back of her bruised hand.

Behind me, Nolan stood at the doorway.

He could not enter.

Good.

Not yet.

Arthur saw the music box when I brought it into the waiting room.

For the first time all day, his arrogance disappeared completely.

“You opened it.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Nolan.

“You took him.”

“He walked.”

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“Nolan always was the weakest.”

Nolan answered from behind me.

“No.”

Arthur turned.

Nolan’s voice shook.

“I was the easiest.”

Silence.

That landed.

Arthur had spent decades calling manipulation strength and obedience loyalty.

One son had finally named it correctly.

Then Elias spoke.

“Mom recorded more.”

Arthur’s head snapped toward him.

Interesting.

I looked at Elias.

“Where?”

He stared at his father.

Then at me.

“Not the chapel.”

Arthur whispered, “Don’t.”

Elias smiled without humor.

“Our mother knew you would eventually destroy all of us.”

Arthur stood.

Vale men moved.

Elias continued.

“She left something for Clara in the Bennett dining room.”

The same room where Clara had lost our baby.

May you like

The same long table where Arthur intended to trap me.

And apparently Helena Bennett had hidden her final truth beneath it years before.
