Chapter 13

The brothers received no absolution.

That mattered to Clara.

When she was strong enough, Elias asked to see her.

She said no.

Roman asked.

No.

Nolan did not ask.

He sent one message through me.

I am sorry I laughed.

Clara read it.

Then put the phone down.

No answer.

That was his consequence to carry.

Arthur tried to use their guilt against them.

He called Elias weak for confessing.

Roman disloyal.

Victor pathetic.

Nolan a coward.

The same tools.

Less effect.

Once manipulation is named, it loses some of its magic.

Not all.

Enough.

The eight brothers eventually came to me together.

I almost laughed at the sight.

First time they stood in one room without Arthur positioning them against one another.

Elias spoke.

“We’ll accept whatever you decide.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“Clara decides access to Clara.”

Silence.

“My decision concerns Vale.”

I removed every Bennett brother from contact with Vale crews, routes, gatherings, and family territory. None would approach Clara, my home, or anything connected to our future unless she wanted it.

Marcus asked:

“Is that permanent?”

“I don’t know.”

They looked confused.

Men raised by Arthur always expected every consequence to be a sentence handed down forever.

“Clara gets to change her mind.”

Elias nodded.

Then asked:

“What about Dad?”

I looked toward the empty chair where Arthur once sat.

“Your father gets exactly what he taught all of you to fear.”

“What?”

“Being unnecessary.”

Arthur retained his house.

His money.

His name.

None of the command.

No captains waiting.

No sons competing for approval.

No daughter returning.

For a man like Arthur, exile did not require distance.

It required irrelevance.

Antonio later asked whether that was enough.

I thought about Clara.

About our baby.

“No.”

It would never be enough.

That was part of punishment too.

Accepting that some losses cannot be balanced.

Only carried without creating another one.
