Chapter 13

Bruno returned to the estate without handcuffs.
No police.
No spectacle.
Only two Ravelli men walking behind him.
That was worse.
Everyone knew what it meant.
He had no protection left.
Lily was no longer in the reception hall.
Domenico had ordered her moved to the upstairs family suite with Sofia and two women he trusted.
Genevieve noticed.
“Finally.”
Domenico looked at her.
She smiled coldly.
“You spent the night proving my point.”
“What point?”
“That children don't belong inside wars.”
Domenico’s eyes hardened.
“You brought the war to her toy.”
Genevieve did not answer.
Adrian laughed from the far side of the room.
“She'll blame you for this one day.”
Domenico looked at him.
Adrian continued.
“Children always blame the parent who survives.”
Genevieve glanced at her son.
Even she looked disgusted.
Adrian smiled.
“What?”
“You all want me ashamed now?”
He sat back.
“I'm not.”
That was the arrogance Domenico had finally learned to use against him.
A man who could not feel shame eventually confessed simply to prove he had been right.
Bruno stood before the senior capos.
Domenico asked one question.
“Who opens the council doors?”
Bruno swallowed.
“I don't know.”
Adrian laughed.
Domenico ignored him.
Bruno continued.
“I only knew there was another person.”
“Man or woman?”
“Man.”
“Capo?”
“I don't know.”
Adrian leaned forward.
“He's useless.”
Bruno turned toward him.
Something changed.
Fear became anger.
“You said I'd run estate security.”
Adrian smiled.
“You believed me?”
Bruno’s face reddened.
Several capos looked away.
Humiliation.
Adrian continued.
“You were a hallway guard with gambling debt.”
“I gave you purpose.”
Bruno’s hands closed.
“You used me.”
Adrian shrugged.
“You were available.”
Domenico watched.
Then Bruno said:
“He used a phrase.”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
Domenico turned.
“What phrase?”
“When he spoke about the inside man.”
Bruno looked toward Adrian.
“He called him ‘the man who never stands.’”
The room became still.
Domenico thought.
Council meetings.
Everyone stood when he entered.
Everyone except one person.
Because Domenico had personally exempted him years ago after a leg injury.
Rocco Marino.
The elder capo.
Again.
Domenico looked toward him.
Rocco’s face went pale.
Genevieve laughed.
“Oh, this is becoming embarrassing.”
Rocco slowly rose from his chair.
Painfully.
Using both hands.
“I did not open the doors for Adrian.”
Domenico held his gaze.
“Did he ask?”
“Yes.”
The room changed.
“When?”
“Last week.”
“And?”
“I refused.”
Adrian smiled.
“He's lying.”
Rocco turned.
“Then say what I opened.”
Adrian’s smile thinned.
Rocco continued.
“Say the date.”
Adrian said nothing.
Domenico watched.
Rocco had challenged him specifically.
That meant he knew something.
“What did Adrian ask you to do?”
Rocco looked toward Domenico.
“Open the council room at midnight.”
“For who?”
“He wouldn't say.”
“Why refuse?”
Rocco’s face hardened.
“Because by then I knew Genevieve was preparing the old guard.”
Genevieve rolled her eyes.
“Congratulations.”
Rocco ignored her.
“I thought Adrian wanted to plant something.”
Domenico looked toward the hidden camera.
That made sense.
Then Rocco added:
“So I gave him another key.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Domenico’s eyes narrowed.
“To what?”
“The old records room.”
Adrian stood.
“You—”
Rocco smiled.
“There.”
His voice was cold.
“The room has no passage into council.”
“You opened the wrong door.”
Adrian stared at him.
Rocco continued.
“And I put a man inside.”
Domenico’s breath slowed.
“A witness?”
Rocco nodded.
The man had watched Adrian enter at midnight.
Adrian realized he had been diverted.
He searched the room.
Found nothing useful.
Then spoke aloud on a phone call.
Rocco's witness had heard everything.
Domenico asked:
“Who was he calling?”
Rocco looked at Adrian.
“Lucian Vale.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Rocco continued.
“And Adrian said the inside man had backed out.”
Silence.
Domenico understood.
There was no second active traitor.
Not anymore.
Adrian had been bluffing Lucian to make his network look stronger.
Genevieve laughed bitterly.
“You lied about that too.”
Adrian looked toward her.
“Everyone lies.”
Domenico’s voice came low.
“No.”
The room went still.
“Everyone chooses.”
He looked at Bruno.
“You chose him.”
Then Rocco.
“You chose to hide suspicion from me.”
Then Genevieve.
“You chose an old grievance over a child.”
Finally Adrian.
“And you chose every person in this room as something to spend.”
Adrian smiled.
Still defiant.
“Yet you're all still standing where I put you.”
Domenico looked around.
Then toward the council doors.
“Open them.”
Matteo did.
Domenico addressed every capo.
“If you believe Adrian should lead this family, walk to him.”
Adrian’s eyes changed.
Genevieve stared.
Domenico continued.
“No punishment for choosing.”
“No ambush outside.”
“No debt later.”
“Walk.”
Silence.
Adrian smiled.
Waiting.
No one moved.
His smile tightened.
He looked toward the junior capos.
“Go on.”
Nothing.
His eyes hardened.
“You were in my meetings.”
One man answered:
“To hear you.”
“Not follow you.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Another capo said:
“You used a child.”
Adrian laughed.
“That's your line?”
The man looked at Lily’s abandoned chair.
“No.”
His voice hardened.
“That's yours.”
Adrian looked around the room.
The power reversal was complete.
He had built his plan on men being too afraid of Domenico to choose freely.
May you like
Domenico gave them the choice.
Nobody chose Adrian.
