Chapter 5

Adrian laughed.
The sound was flat.
Disbelieving.
“That's it?”
Rocco stared at him.
“That's what you've got?”
He looked around the room.
“An old man telling ghost stories because Carlo isn't here to defend his version?”
Genevieve smiled again.
Proud.
Sharp.
“Good.”
She touched Adrian’s arm.
“Don't let them rewrite your father.”
Domenico watched her.
Too quick.
Too prepared.
Rocco continued.
“Salvatore met the Ventresca crew three times.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
Everyone in the older generation knew the name.
The Ventrescas had once tried to break Ravelli control of Boston.
Three men died.
Two businesses burned.
One Ravelli cousin disappeared and was never found.
Genevieve rolled her eyes.
“Men meet enemies.”
“Not with maps.”
Her smile disappeared.
Rocco continued.
“Not with lists of who sleeps where.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You better be careful.”
Rocco did not move.
“Or what?”
Adrian’s jaw flexed.
Rocco looked at him.
“Your father threatened me too.”
That landed.
Adrian’s hands closed.
Domenico stepped between them before arrogance became violence.
“Keep talking.”
Rocco nodded.
Carlo discovered Salvatore’s meetings.
Confronted him privately.
Salvatore claimed he was creating a back channel.
Then a Ravelli warehouse was attacked exactly where Salvatore’s map had marked guard rotations.
The family understood.
Genevieve cut in.
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“No one understood anything.”
Rocco looked at her.
“You did.”
Her face changed.
Adrian noticed.
“What?”
Genevieve ignored him.
She glared at Rocco.
“You were a driver.”
“I was in the room.”
“No, you weren't.”
Silence.
Rocco slowly tilted his head.
“I didn't say which room.”
Genevieve stopped.
Domenico’s eyes narrowed.
Adrian turned toward his mother.
She realized the mistake immediately.
Then lifted her chin as though it did not matter.
“I knew there was a confrontation.”
Rocco smiled without warmth.
“You knew more.”
Adrian looked between them.
“Mother.”
Genevieve snapped:
“Don't.”
The command came automatically.
Adrian’s face hardened.
For the first time, the son did not obey.
“What happened?”
Genevieve looked at him.
“You know what happened.”
“No.”
His voice grew colder.
“I know what you told me.”
Rocco watched.
Domenico did too.
The old grievance had begun splitting from the woman who created it.
Genevieve’s eyes flashed.
“Your father was humiliated.”
Rocco said:
“Your father confessed.”
Adrian turned.
Rocco continued.
“Carlo gave him a choice.”
“Leave Boston with Genevieve and Adrian.”
“Keep his name.”
“Keep his son out of it.”
“In exchange, the betrayal stayed inside five men.”
Adrian stared.
Rocco’s voice softened.
“Salvatore took the deal.”
Genevieve laughed.
“Convenient.”
She looked at Adrian.
“Dead man confesses. Dead man can't deny.”
Rocco’s eyes hardened.
“He knelt.”
Genevieve’s face changed instantly.
“Salvatore never knelt.”
Silence.
Nobody had mentioned kneeling.
Rocco slowly looked at her.
Domenico did too.
Adrian’s eyes moved toward his mother.
Genevieve realized what she had done.
Her lips tightened.
Rocco spoke quietly.
“I never said he did.”
Genevieve’s arrogance held for one more second.
May you like
Then cracked.
Because she had just corrected a detail only someone inside the room could have known.
