Chapter 9

Domenico did not let Adrian control the pace.

He turned the recording back on.

Lucian’s voice:

“Your mother thinks she is restoring Salvatore.”

Adrian laughed.

“She needs a story.”

“And Domenico?”

“He needs an enemy.”

Lucian:

“And you?”

A pause.

“I need both of them facing the wrong direction.”

Genevieve stared at the screen.

Adrian stopped smiling.

The clip continued.

Lucian asked:

“What happens if she wins?”

Adrian:

“I take the chair from an old woman.”

Genevieve’s mouth opened slightly.

Lucian:

“And if she loses?”

Adrian laughed.

“Then I hand Domenico every recording she made and tell him I spent months trying to stop her.”

The room went dead.

Genevieve slowly looked at her son.

He did not look back.

Domenico watched.

This was not shock anymore.

It was humiliation.

For decades Genevieve had believed herself the smartest person in every room.

Adrian had just revealed that he built an escape route through her downfall.

She walked toward him.

Her voice trembled with rage.

“You planned to give me to him.”

Adrian finally looked at her.

“If necessary.”

Her hand lifted.

He caught it again.

This time his grip tightened.

“You hit one child tonight.”

His voice became cold.

“Don't try me.”

Genevieve stared at her own son.

Then laughed.

Soft.

Ugly.

“You think Vale respects you?”

Adrian released her.

“He respects results.”

“No.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“He respects weakness he can purchase.”

Adrian smirked.

“You would know.”

That landed.

Genevieve’s face hardened.

Domenico let the exchange continue.

Lucian’s recording resumed.

“What about the girl?”

Adrian answered:

“She stays close to Domenico.”

“Why?”

“Because she keeps him predictable.”

Domenico’s eyes became cold.

Lucian:

“And if Genevieve hurts her?”

Adrian’s reply came without hesitation.

“Better.”

Lily did not understand the word in context.

Domenico did.

Every adult did.

Adrian had known his mother’s cruelty toward Lily might escalate.

And considered it useful.

Domenico slowly looked at him.

Adrian’s confidence returned out of instinct.

“What?”

Domenico said nothing.

Adrian spread his hands.

“You want me to apologize for understanding you?”

Still nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“When she cries, you stop thinking.”

Domenico’s jaw tightened.

Adrian smiled.

“There.”

“You do it even now.”

He pointed toward Lily.

“Every man in this room sees it.”

Lily pressed against Domenico.

Adrian continued.

“You think fatherhood made you noble.”

His voice became mocking.

“It made you readable.”

Genevieve laughed bitterly.

“At least he's honest now.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You taught me honesty is for people without leverage.”

Domenico finally spoke.

“You built your plan around my daughter.”

Adrian shrugged.

“I built it around you.”

“She was three.”

“She was useful.”

A ripple moved through the room.

Adrian saw the disgust.

He doubled down.

Arrogance as armor.

“Don't look at me like that.”

He faced the capos.

“Every one of you has used family names to open doors.”

“Used marriages to end wars.”

“Used sons to bind crews.”

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“I used a toy.”

Domenico stepped toward him.

Adrian smiled.

Waiting for the punch.

Wanting it.

Domenico stopped inches away.

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

Domenico looked at the capos.

“You all heard him.”

Then back at Adrian.

“You don't get to turn your own words into my violence.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

That was a power reversal he had not planned for.

Genevieve saw it.

So did Lucian’s recording.

The clip continued.

Lucian asked:

“When do I move?”

Adrian:

“After Genevieve calls the old guard.”

“And Domenico answers.”

Lucian:

“With what?”

Adrian’s smile on-screen became slow.

“Exactly what he always answers with.”

Domenico looked at the real Adrian.

The setup was complete.

Adrian had expected violence.

Expected Domenico to attack family.

Expected old capos to see proof that Genevieve’s warnings were true.

Expected the house to split.

Then Lucian would enter the fracture.

But the recording had one more line.

Lucian:

“And if Domenico doesn't take the bait?”

Adrian:

“He will.”

A pause.

“Because tomorrow I give Genevieve permission to touch the girl.”

Genevieve’s face emptied.

She slowly turned toward Adrian.

“You told me Lily heard too much.”

Adrian did not answer.

Her eyes widened.

“You wanted me to scare her.”

Silence.

Domenico understood.

Genevieve’s cruelty had been hers.

But Adrian had deliberately aimed it.

May you like

The slap that opened the night was not random.

Adrian had placed his own mother beside a frightened child and waited for her arrogance to do the rest.
