Chapter 3

Adrian laughed first.

Too loudly.

“Don.”

He shook his head.

“You're building a coup out of a toddler’s vocabulary.”

Lily looked toward him.

His smile became cruel.

“What else did Dino hear, sweetheart?”

The word sounded like an insult.

“Did he hear dragons too?”

Domenico stepped forward.

Adrian did not retreat.

That was the thing about him.

Even after being thrown through a service trolley, even with the ring exposed and the camera in Domenico’s hand, he still believed confidence could substitute for innocence.

Genevieve joined him.

“Play it.”

Domenico looked at her.

She spread both hands.

“Please.”

Her eyes were sharp.

“If you're going to accuse your blood in front of half the family, at least humiliate yourself properly.”

Matteo brought a small council-room tablet.

The memory card went in.

Static.

Dark fabric.

Lily’s dinosaur had apparently spent hours tucked under arms, beneath chairs, against rugs.

Then an image stabilized.

The private council room.

Empty.

Night.

The dinosaur sat behind a curtain near the carved sideboard.

Adrian entered.

Alone.

He walked directly to Domenico’s chair.

And sat.

No hesitation.

No joke.

He rested both hands on the armrests.

Then smiled.

A moment later the door opened.

Six men entered.

Two were junior capos.

One handled Boston gambling houses.

Two oversaw waterfront crews.

The sixth—

Domenico’s eyes hardened.

Matteo.

Every head turned toward the security chief.

Lily pressed closer to Domenico.

Matteo looked sick.

Adrian smiled.

“There.”

He pointed toward the screen.

“Your perfect loyal guard.”

Domenico did not look away from Matteo.

The recording continued.

One man spoke.

“Don Adrian.”

Not joking.

Not drinking.

Formal.

Adrian leaned back in Domenico’s chair.

“You'll use that name when it matters.”

Genevieve entered last.

She approached the head of the table.

Placed Carlo Ravelli’s black ring in front of Adrian.

Then said:

“Soon.”

The video stopped.

Not because the file ended.

Because Domenico paused it.

Silence.

Genevieve crossed her arms.

“Well?”

Her arrogance had returned completely.

“You finally discovered that men speak to other men when you are not in the room.”

Domenico looked at Matteo.

“Why were you there?”

Matteo swallowed.

Genevieve answered for him.

“Because unlike you, some people still understand this family isn't a nursery.”

Domenico’s eyes moved toward her.

She continued.

“You leave council early because Lily has a fever.”

A sneer.

“You cancel dinner because Lily wants you to read a story.”

Another step closer.

“You bring a child to rooms where men discuss territory and blood, then act surprised when people begin wondering whether fatherhood has made you weak.”

Lily stared at her.

Genevieve noticed.

“Don't look at me like that.”

Her voice turned even colder.

“This is exactly why children belong upstairs.”

Domenico moved one step.

Genevieve lifted her chin.

Still not afraid.

“Go ahead.”

She smiled.

“Throw your aunt into another flower stand because your daughter heard something unpleasant.”

Domenico stopped.

Genevieve had expected violence.

He gave her none.

Instead, he looked at Matteo again.

“Answer.”

Matteo’s voice came low.

“She told me you knew.”

Domenico’s expression did not change.

“Who?”

“Genevieve.”

Her eyes flashed.

Matteo continued.

“She said it was a private loyalty discussion.”

Adrian laughed.

“You're blaming an old woman now?”

Matteo looked at him.

“I was told Domenico had approved a second circle to test the younger capos.”

Adrian’s smile thinned.

Domenico understood.

Matteo had been deceived.

Maybe.

He looked back at the screen.

“Play it.”

The recording resumed.

Genevieve spoke.

“Domenico thinks the old guard will follow him forever because they followed Carlo.”

One capo asked:

“What are you asking?”

Genevieve smiled on-screen.

“Nothing tonight.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“We only want to know who understands what happens when a boss forgets the chair belongs to the family, not his feelings.”

Another capo shifted uncomfortably.

“Are you challenging him?”

Adrian answered:

“Not yet.”

Then he looked toward the hidden dinosaur.

Not directly.

Past it.

“First we learn what he knows.”

Domenico’s eyes narrowed.

The recording continued.

Adrian:

“He speaks freely around the girl.”

Genevieve:

“And the girl takes that ridiculous animal everywhere.”

Lily’s small face changed.

She looked down at her toy.

Domenico felt it.

The betrayal was no longer abstract.

Adrian smiled on-screen.

“Men watch guards.”

“Nobody watches a stuffed dinosaur.”

The room went silent.

Domenico looked at the real Adrian.

“You put the camera inside her toy.”

Adrian did not deny it.

He gave a slow shrug.

“You finally caught up.”

Lily looked at him.

Her voice cracked.

“You cut Dino?”

Adrian smiled down at her.

“Yes.”

The cruelty was casual.

“He survived.”

Lily hugged the dinosaur to her chest.

Adrian laughed.

“See? Tragedy over.”

Domenico’s hands remained at his sides.

Still.

Controlled.

Genevieve stepped closer to him.

“You want the truth?”

Her voice became sharp.

“We used the one thing you never searched.”

She looked directly at Lily.

“Because you made everyone too frightened to tell your little princess she doesn't belong in adult rooms.”

Lily lowered her head.

Domenico did not strike Genevieve.

He looked at the screen again.

“Keep playing.”

The next clip was days later.

Adrian alone.

He opened the dinosaur.

Removed the memory card.

Then inserted another.

Domenico frowned.

Genevieve did too.

Her eyes moved toward her son.

“What was that?”

Adrian ignored her.

On-screen, Adrian whispered to someone outside the camera’s view:

“My mother only needs to see what I want her to see.”

Genevieve’s face went still.

May you like

For the first time, she looked at Adrian instead of Domenico.

Her son had been hiding recordings from her too.
