Chapter 1

“The boy is my family. You are not.”

Graham stared at me.

Rain hammered the open patio behind us while Bianca remained seated on the padded bench, one hand pressed against the cushion where I had forced her down.

Neither answered.

Good.

Toby was across the room with my bodyguard, wrapped in a towel twice his size. His wet socks left little marks across the stone floor.

He was still shaking.

Not from cold alone.

I picked up his backpack.

Light.

Too light for someone supposedly being sent away.

I opened it.

One shirt.

One pair of trousers.

A toothbrush.

A stuffed rabbit missing one ear.

And a small velvet pouch.

Graham moved.

“Dad.”

I looked at him.

He stopped.

I opened the pouch.

A wedding ring fell into my palm.

Not Bianca’s.

Claire’s.

Toby’s mother.

Graham’s first wife.

Dead eighteen months.

My throat tightened.

Claire had worn that ring every day from the moment Graham married her until the hospital removed it from her hand.

I had assumed Graham kept it.

Apparently Toby did.

I crouched beside my grandson.

“Where did you get this?”

He looked at his father.

Then whispered:

“Mommy box.”

“What mommy box?”

“Daddy said no more.”

Graham closed his eyes.

Toby continued in the broken logic of three-year-olds.

“Bianca said new house doesn’t need Mommy things.”

The room changed.

I stood slowly.

“What new house?”

Bianca immediately said:

“He doesn’t understand.”

I ignored her.

Toby pointed toward the rain.

“Far house.”

My blood went cold.

Not an orphanage.

Something had already been arranged.

I looked inside the backpack again.

At the bottom lay a small brass key on a blue plastic tag.

WELLS LODGE — 4.

Bianca’s family property.

I knew the place.

Private.

Remote.

Three hours north.

I looked at Graham.

“You weren’t sending him to an orphanage.”

Silence.

“You were sending my grandson to the Wells.”

His face answered.

May you like

And suddenly Bianca’s cruelty at the door looked less like spontaneous hatred.

It looked like the final step of a plan.
