Chapter 9

The wedding was postponed.

Graham decided.

Not me.

Bianca called it humiliation.

I called it breathing room.

Harrison Wells reacted by withdrawing three proposed business partnerships.

Good.

Price revealed motive.

One Ashford associate panicked.

“We need those routes.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“We like those routes.”

Difference.

Nobody was starving.

Nobody was trapped.

We would adjust.

Harrison expected economic discomfort to push Graham back into line.

Instead, it clarified everything.

Graham came to me with one message from Harrison.

A MAN WHO CANNOT REMOVE A THREE-YEAR-OLD OBSTACLE CANNOT RUN A FAMILY.

My son read it twice.

Then deleted it.

Not enough to redeem him.

Enough to show direction.

“What now?” he asked.

“You work.”

His face fell.

He had expected punishment.

Or promotion denied dramatically.

Instead I gave him an ugly Ashford warehouse operation in Indiana.

Scheduling chaos.

Vendor disputes.

No social glamour.

No capos calling him heir.

“You want me to run a warehouse.”

“I want you to show me you can make decisions without needing applause from Bianca, Harrison, or me.”

He stared.

Then nodded.

“And Toby?”

Not his decision alone anymore.

That hurt him.

Good.

“You do not see him unsupervised.”

His jaw tightened.

“I’m his father.”

“Yes.”

“And he is a child you abandoned in the rain.”

Silence.

“Father is a relationship.”

I leaned closer.

“Not a master key.”

Graham’s eyes filled.

He nodded.

No argument.

That mattered.

Bianca moved back to the Wells property.

Took the engagement ring.

Kept it.

Wedding uncertain.

Relationship uncertain.

Access to Toby ended completely.

Not because she was female.

Not because she was outsider.

May you like

Because she had demonstrated what she did when a child stood between her and reassurance.

That was enough.
