Chapter 6

The family dinner was scheduled for the following night.
I did not cancel it.
Bianca assumed I would.
That was why I kept it.
Twenty-three relatives.
Seven senior associates.
Three Wells representatives.
No Harrison.
Coward.
He preferred influence delivered through children.
I arrived with Toby.
Dry clothes.
His own shoes.
Claire’s ring safe in my pocket.
Graham came separately.
Bianca was not invited.
That caused immediate whispers.
Good.
Let people be uncomfortable.
I sat at the table.
Toby beside me eating bread.
Three-year-olds improve political meetings by refusing to care.
One senior associate, Michael Dorr, finally asked:
“Where is Bianca?”
“At home.”
“And the wedding?”
“Uncertain.”
The room shifted.
Then:
“And Graham’s transition?”
I looked at him.
“My what?”
He went pale.
There.
The story had spread.
“How many of you were told I intended to step down after the wedding?”
Nine hands eventually rose.
Graham closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
Not all nine had heard it from him.
Four from Bianca.
Two from Wells representatives.
Three from Graham himself.
I turned toward my son.
“What exactly did you say?”
He answered without hiding.
“That I expected to take more responsibility after marriage.”
Reasonable.
Then:
“And that you were tired.”
I laughed.
“I’m tired because people keep planning my retirement.”
A few men smiled nervously.
Then Michael asked the question everyone had built around.
“If not Graham, who?”
I looked at Toby.
Several eyes followed.
There.
Finally.
I understood the poison.
People assumed if Graham failed, I would skip him and someday give Ashford to the grandson.
Bianca knew that.
Harrison knew that.
Graham feared it.
A toddler had become his father’s rival without anyone asking me.
I put my hand on the table.
“Toby is three.”
Silence.
“He is not your future boss.”
More silence.
“He is not Graham’s competition.”
I looked directly at my son.
“And he never was.”
Graham stared at me.
For the first time, I saw how deeply he had believed otherwise.

The Wells family had not created that fear.
They merely found it waiting.
