Chapter 16

Bianca apologized to Toby eighteen months after the storm.
His choice?
Partly.
He was nearly five.
Old enough to remember her.
Young enough not to understand what adults wanted from apology.
We kept it simple.
Garden.
Daylight.
Graham there.
Me nearby.
Bianca crouched.
Did not touch him.
“I’m sorry I threw your shoes outside.”
Toby looked at her.
“They got muddy.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I told you to go away.”
He frowned.
“You said orphanage.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t live there.”
“No.”
“I live Grandpa and Daddy.”
“Sometimes both.”
“Yes.”
Bianca smiled through tears.
“That’s good.”
Then she said the most important part.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Toby stared.
Then asked:
“You have snacks?”
Children remain undefeated.
Bianca had crackers.
He took them.
Not forgiveness.
Snack.
Adults need to stop confusing the two.
Later Graham asked if I thought he should marry her.
I nearly threw him into the lake.
Instead:
“What do you think?”
He groaned.
“You’re committed to this.”
“Yes.”
They eventually started seeing each other again.
Slowly.
No engagement.
No shared house.
No Toby involvement beyond what the child chose.
Bianca rebuilt her relationship with Graham separately from any role around his son.
That distinction saved them from repeating everything.
Maybe they would marry.
May you like
Maybe not.
For once, nobody scheduled the future before the people inside it were ready.
