Chapter 12

Harrison Wells came to see me personally.

Finally.

He expected negotiation.

I offered coffee.

Nothing else.

He declined.

Of course.

“Conrad, this has become emotional.”

I laughed.

He hated it.

“You keep using that word like it means inaccurate.”

His jaw tightened.

“The boy could have been comfortable.”

“At your lodge.”

“Yes.”

“Without his father.”

“Temporarily.”

There it was.

Always temporary when someone else pays the emotional cost.

I asked:

“Why did Toby matter so much?”

Harrison answered with old doctrine.

The next Ashford head needed a clean household.

A wife whose branch fully supported him.

Future children whose loyalties were uncomplicated.

I stared.

“Toby is Graham’s child.”

“From another life.”

There.

Finally.

I understood why Bianca could behave as she did.

She learned from a master.

People became eras.

Assets.

Branches.

Previous lives.

Anything except human beings with continuity.

Then Harrison made his mistake.

“If Graham wants Wells support, the boy cannot remain central.”

I smiled.

“Then Graham doesn’t have Wells support.”

His expression changed.

“You cannot answer for him.”

“Correct.”

I leaned back.

“So ask him.”

Graham entered.

I had invited him without telling Harrison.

My son looked nervous.

Good.

Harrison repeated the condition.

No Toby at the center of Graham’s household.

No Claire memorial.

No competing inheritance expectations.

In exchange:

Routes.

Capital.

Recognition.

Graham listened.

Then said:

“No.”

One word.

Harrison stared.

“Think.”

“I did.”

“Bianca?”

Graham’s face tightened.

“I love her.”

Harrison relaxed too soon.

Then Graham continued.

“But if marrying her requires abandoning my son, I don’t marry her.”

Silence.

Harrison stood.

Called him weak.

Called him unready.

Called him his father’s child as though that were an insult.

Graham took it.

Did not look at me.

Good.

He was not performing for my approval.

He was choosing while knowing I was there.

Different.

Harrison left.

May you like

One alliance ended at my kitchen table.

The house remained standing.
