Chapter 12

We found the messenger through Lily’s wet cleaning rag.
It should have been thrown away.
One of the house women had folded it into a utility bin instead. Thomas brought it to me because something metallic had caught in the cloth.
A pin.
Small.
Black enamel.
Sterling reserve crest.
Only private reserve guards used them.
Dominic recognized it immediately.
“There should be twelve.”
“How many active?”
“Six.”
I looked at him.
“Bring them.”
Five came.
That answered the first question.
The missing man was Caleb Voss, reserve security lieutenant.
He had worked under Dominic for nine years.
Trusted.
Quiet.
Exactly the kind of man old systems use best.
We found his room empty.
Then Thomas found a secondary service route open behind the linen corridor.
Michael swore.
“That path goes to the carriage house.”
I thought of Lily upstairs.
“Why threaten the heir and run?”
Dominic answered.
“To stop us before midnight.”
The clock read 11:47.
Thirteen minutes.
We didn’t have time to chase Caleb and dissolve the reserve separately.
That was the point.
A forced choice.
Again.
Lily or family structure.
Eleanor saw it and almost smiled, then caught herself.
I looked at her.
“You still think this proves something.”
She said nothing.
Michael understood.
“They’re recreating her test.”
Exactly.
Whoever Caleb served believed I would abandon the dissolution process to chase the immediate threat around Lily.
That would preserve the reserve past midnight.
I looked at Thomas.
“How secure is she?”
“Six men, Margaret, two house women. Interior door barred.”
Good.
I turned to Michael and Dominic.
“We finish this.”
Eleanor stared at me.
“You’re staying?”
“My daughter is protected.”
“And if they take her?”
“They won’t.”
“You’re gambling with her.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“I’m refusing to let your system manufacture another false choice.”
That was the pattern.
Make love look like weakness.
Make protection look irrational.
Force someone to abandon structure or family.
Then punish whichever they choose.
I would not play it.
Dominic placed the founder’s seal on the table.
Michael put down the ring.
I placed my Sterling signet beside them.
Three symbols.
Three sources of authority.
The old capos formed a circle.

At 11:51, Dominic spoke the first dissolution phrase.
Then the lights went out.
