Chapter 9

Richard’s question broke the room open.

Eleanor had spent the evening pretending Richard was her loyal son, her natural ally, the man who attacked me because he believed in Sterling authority.

Now he finally asked the question every useful man eventually asks a manipulator.

What happens to me when I stop being useful?

Eleanor stared at him.

“You know exactly what I planned.”

“No.”

Richard looked toward Michael.

“If Michael claimed the reserve, where did that leave me?”

Silence.

Michael answered.

“Nowhere.”

Richard’s face changed.

Eleanor snapped, “He’s lying.”

Michael shook his head.

“The founder’s structure recognizes one blood claimant at a time. You needed me to challenge Elena. Richard was never the destination.”

Richard turned back to his mother.

“You told me I would manage the house.”

“You would have.”

“For how long?”

She said nothing.

That was enough.

Richard laughed once, bitterly.

He had attacked me for a future that did not exist.

I did not pity him.

But I understood what had happened.

Eleanor gave every person a role that made them feel central.

Lily was the test.

Richard was the force.

Michael was the claimant.

I was the target.

And Eleanor intended to remain the one person interpreting what Sterling required.

Richard looked at me.

“I didn’t know about Michael.”

“I believe you.”

His eyes widened slightly.

That was not forgiveness.

It was accuracy.

“You still put your hands on me,” I said. “You still attacked me after watching what she did to Lily.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

Good.

No excuse.

Michael looked at the clock.

11:31.

“We’re running out of time.”

Dominic placed the reserve seal beside the founder’s ring.

I looked at both objects.

“Dissolve it.”

Eleanor stood so fast her chair scraped hard against the floor.

“No.”

Nobody moved.

She looked around the room.

“You dissolve this and you destroy Sterling independence.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

I looked toward the doorway leading back to the main house.

“I’m destroying the part that lets you starve, humiliate, or threaten children and call it family preservation.”

Eleanor’s face twisted.

Then she said something that made every capo go still.

“If Lily had been Andrew’s son, none of this would be happening.”

There it was.

Not tradition.

Not discipline.

Not loyalty.

A child had been punished partly because she was a girl expected to inherit power Eleanor did not believe she should hold.

I looked at Michael.

He understood too.

May you like

The reserve wasn’t only old.

It was designed for a future Lily was never supposed to have.
