Chapter 7

Michael refused the founder’s ring.

That unsettled Eleanor more than if he had put it on.

“You came for the reserve,” she said.

“No.”

“You always wanted it.”

“I wanted choice.”

He looked at me.

“Andrew understood the difference eventually.”

I wanted to ask a hundred questions about my husband, but Lily was upstairs and midnight was getting closer.

“What happens now?”

Michael set the case on the table beneath the founder’s portrait.

“Eleanor triggered a challenge in front of witnesses. That activates the old reserve custom.”

I hated the word custom already.

“Meaning?”

“The blood claimant can demand temporary control.”

Richard straightened.

Eleanor smiled slightly.

There it was.

The plan she still believed could be saved.

Michael continued.

“Or the claimant can renounce it.”

Her smile vanished.

Richard looked at him.

“You wouldn’t.”

Michael almost looked amused.

“I lived twelve years without Sterling permission. Why would I come back for it now?”

Eleanor’s face twisted.

“Because you’re blood.”

“So is Lily.”

Silence.

I looked at him.

He nodded toward me.

“That is the part she hates most.”

Eleanor stared.

Michael continued.

“Lily is Sterling blood through Andrew. Moretti blood through Elena. A child who ties both houses together and makes Eleanor’s version of purity meaningless.”

I felt cold.

This had never only been about me.

Lily represented a future Eleanor could not define.

A Sterling heir raised by a Moretti mother.

A child whose loyalty could not be guaranteed by humiliation if I stood in the way.

Eleanor’s voice sharpened.

“She is spoiled.”

Michael looked at her.

“She is three.”

“She will inherit weakness.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“She will inherit whatever I teach her.”

Eleanor laughed bitterly. “Exactly.”

That was the clearest thing she had said all night.

She feared motherhood because it meant influence beyond her control.

Michael looked at the clock.

11:16.

“Before midnight, you need the capos.”

“Why?”

“To end the reserve question permanently.”

Eleanor’s eyes widened.

“Don’t.”

Michael ignored her.

“The founder’s structure can be dissolved if the active head, the blood claimant, and reserve keeper agree.”

I looked at Dominic.

Then Michael.

Then Eleanor.

For the first time, she looked truly terrified.

Not of losing tonight.

Of losing the mechanism she had planned to use forever.

I understood.

She didn’t just want the house back.

She wanted future generations trapped inside the same choice she had forced on me.
