Chapter 15

We dissolved the founder’s reserve at 11:59.

One minute before midnight.

No applause.

No ceremony beyond what the old system itself required.

Dominic broke the reserve seal.

Michael placed the founder’s ring inside the original case and closed it.

I removed my own signet long enough to press it against the dissolution ledger, then put it back on.

Not because I worshipped symbols.

Because I intended mine to mean something different.

Eleanor watched from the chapel doorway.

She looked older than she had at the gala.

Not defeated physically.

Disconnected.

Power had moved away from her without anyone asking permission.

Samuel sat in the first pew with his head bowed. Caleb stood under guard. Richard remained at the back, bruised and quiet.

Lily held my hand.

She had insisted on coming once Thomas told her I was safe.

I did not send her away.

Not because she needed to understand succession.

Because she deserved to see the room where adults finally stopped choosing tradition over her.

Eleanor looked at me.

“You destroyed Andrew’s inheritance.”

Michael answered before I could.

“No.”

She turned.

“He destroyed this years ago. We only finished what he started.”

That hurt her.

Andrew had become the son she could no longer rewrite.

I looked at Richard.

“You lose all active family authority.”

He nodded.

No protest.

“You put your hands on me after watching Lily suffer. Whatever Eleanor promised you does not erase that.”

“I know.”

Good.

Then Samuel.

“You lose reserve command because there is no reserve left to command.”

He almost smiled.

“Fair.”

Caleb was removed from inner-house security.

Not for believing differently.

For threatening Lily.

That distinction mattered.

Finally Eleanor.

She looked at me as if daring me to make punishment theatrical.

I refused.

“You leave the Sterling estate.”

Her face changed.

“This is my house.”

“No.”

I took Lily into my arms.

“It was a house you used to make people afraid.”

I looked around the chapel.

“That ends tonight.”

Eleanor glanced at Lily.

For one second, I thought she might soften.

Instead she said, “You will regret raising her weak.”

Lily buried her face in my shoulder.

I kissed her hair.

“No.”

I looked at Eleanor.

May you like

“I will regret every day I allowed you to make her think kindness was weakness.”

That was the last word she got from me.
