Chapter 8

I brought the senior capos into the portrait gallery.

No donors.

No cameras.

No audience for Eleanor to manipulate.

She hated that.

Richard stayed beside her, though he had stopped looking certain of anything. His mother had promised him restoration. Michael’s existence had turned him into another man waiting to discover what version of the plan he had actually been given.

Dominic explained the founder’s reserve.

Michael confirmed the old blood claim.

Then I told them what happened to Lily.

Not the fight.

Not Richard’s punch.

Not my response.

Just the part that mattered.

“My daughter was forced onto her knees and soaked in freezing water because Eleanor wanted me to prove Sterling came before her.”

One capo looked at Eleanor.

“Is that true?”

She answered without shame.

“Elena has spent years choosing the child whenever family discipline becomes necessary.”

The room changed.

Another capo frowned.

“Family discipline?”

“She undermines structure.”

“She is three.”

Eleanor scoffed. “Everyone keeps saying that as if children remain three forever.”

There.

Her philosophy again.

Train obedience early.

Own the future later.

I looked around the room.

“This is what the reserve protects.”

Eleanor snapped, “It protects continuity.”

“No.”

I placed the founder’s ring on the table.

“It protects dead men’s control over living people.”

That line hit Michael hardest.

He looked at the portrait above us.

Then at the ring.

“My father used that seal to remove me without killing me.”

Richard turned toward him.

“What?”

Michael finally told the full story.

He had not simply been sent away.

Eleanor and the old patriarch staged the boating accident, froze his accounts, cut his crews, and threatened anyone who contacted him. Andrew was told his brother chose exile after betraying the family.

Michael let the lie stand because fighting it would have started a war.

Andrew discovered the truth years later.

That was why he stopped using the founder’s reserve.

That was why he quietly moved power toward modern command.

And that was why he made Dominic promise to call Michael if Eleanor ever revived the old system through Lily.

I looked at Eleanor.

“You knew Andrew rejected this.”

She said nothing.

“Your own son dismantled your weapon.”

Her face hardened.

“He became weak after marrying you.”

There it was.

Not just hatred of me.

Hatred of any love that made a Sterling man harder for her to control.

Richard slowly stepped away from his mother.

Eleanor noticed.

“What are you doing?”

May you like

He looked at her.

“For the first time tonight, I’m wondering what you planned for me after Elena fell.”
