Chapter 12

Richard sat down.
Mark told him everything.
The Colorado project.
The transfers.
The nine hundred thousand dollars.
Ethan’s deadline.
The plan to confess.
Richard did not interrupt.
That was unusual.
Mark finished.
His hands shook.
“I thought if Bell Holdings collapsed after Ethan died, you'd blame me.”
Richard’s eyes stayed on him.
“Did you think taking Emma’s son would fix what you stole?”
Mark looked away.
“Yes.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Vittorio watched.
The old man had spent days manipulating Ethan’s words.
But he had not known his own son was draining money from the company.
Control had not produced knowledge.
It had produced silence.
Richard whispered:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Mark laughed once.
Painfully.
“Because you already lost one son.”
Richard looked up.
The sentence hit like a blow.
Mark’s voice cracked.
“And every time I failed, I felt like you looked at me and wondered why Daniel died instead.”
Richard stood so quickly the chair moved.
“No.”
Mark flinched anyway.
Richard stopped.
Saw it.
His hands slowly opened.
“No.”
This time softer.
“I never thought that.”
Mark's eyes filled.
“You never had to say it.”
Silence.
Richard looked around Daniel’s old room.
A shrine he believed he had abandoned.
Maybe he never had.
Vittorio saw the pattern.
Grief becoming comparison.
Comparison becoming pressure.
Pressure becoming secrecy.
Same mechanism in both families.
Different clothes.
Richard sat again.
Then admitted something neither son expected.
Bell Holdings was failing partly because of him.
He had made two aggressive acquisitions trying to prove the company was still powerful enough to stand independent of DeLuca partnerships.
Pride.
Not Mark alone.
Not markets alone.
Richard had concealed losses from the board.
Mark had concealed losses from Richard.
Father and son were competing through silence while telling themselves they were protecting each other.
Vittorio almost laughed at how familiar it sounded.
Then Emma called.
Mark answered.
Her voice was tired.
“The babies are asking for names.”
Mark smiled despite everything.
Then Emma asked:
“Is Dad there?”
“Yes.”
“Put me on speaker.”
Richard’s breathing stopped.
Mark did.
Emma’s voice filled Daniel’s old room.
“Dad.”
Richard could barely answer.
“I'm here.”
“You are not taking my son.”
His eyes closed.
“I know.”
“You are not taking either child anywhere without me.”
“I know.”
“And the custody filing gets withdrawn.”
“Yes.”
A long silence.
Then Emma said:
“I love you.”
Richard’s face broke.
“But if you ever use Ethan’s death against me again, you don't get access to my children.”
Richard covered his mouth.
Vittorio looked away.
Emma continued.
“I need you to understand both parts.”
Richard nodded before remembering she could not see him.
“I do.”
Then Emma added one final thing.
“I read Ethan’s letter.”
Vittorio looked at the envelope in his hand.
Impossible.
Richard had it.
Emma explained.
Ethan had emailed a copy to himself.
Hospital IT helped her access his estate-authorized archive.
Richard’s face changed.
She already knew what he tried to hide.
Then Emma said:
“Vittorio needs to hear the last paragraph.”
Vittorio went still.
May you like
The private part was no longer private.
And Emma wanted him to hear it.
