Chapter 13

Emma read Ethan’s final paragraph over the phone.

Dad loves me.

Sometimes so much he mistakes fear for responsibility.

He worries that if he doesn't decide first, something terrible will happen.

I inherited some of that.

I’m trying not to give it to my children.

If Dad ever asks what I wanted, tell him this:

I wanted him to be Grandpa.

Nothing less.

Nothing more.

Vittorio closed his eyes.

Grandpa.

Not successor-maker.

Not protector of legacy.

Not replacement father.

Not boss.

Just Grandpa.

Richard stared at him.

For once, the two older men understood exactly the same lesson from opposite sides.

Emma continued.

“And Dad…”

Richard straightened.

“Ethan wrote about you too.”

His breathing stopped.

“He said you made him feel heard when he needed someone outside the DeLuca family.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“That part was real.”

A pause.

“He also said you started hearing your own grief instead of him.”

Richard lowered his head.

The phone went silent for several seconds.

Then Emma said:

“I’m naming the babies tomorrow.”

Both grandfathers looked up.

“You will find out with everyone else.”

That was another boundary.

Neither argued.

When the call ended, Vittorio handed Emma’s unopened physical letter to Mark.

“Bring this to her.”

Mark nodded.

Richard withdrew the emergency custody petition that night.

His attorney confirmed it in writing.

No conditions.

No demand for access.

No leverage.

Then Bell Holdings faced its own reckoning.

Richard disclosed hidden losses.

Mark disclosed the diverted funds.

The board opened an independent review.

Some assets would have to be sold.

The company would survive.

Smaller.

Less impressive.

Perhaps healthier.

Mark looked terrified.

“I’m going to lose my position.”

Richard’s answer surprised him.

“Maybe.”

Mark stared.

Richard continued.

“You should.”

No cruelty.

No disowning.

No promise to save him.

Just consequence.

Then Vittorio’s phone rang.

His attorney.

The DeLuca side had its own problem.

Ethan had been quietly moving some of his ownership interests into a new trust.

One not controlled by Vittorio.

The trust beneficiaries:

Emma.

Both children.

Trust protector:

an outside fiduciary.

No DeLuca capo had authority.

Vittorio stared at the document.

Ethan had been separating his family financially before he died.

Not abandoning Vittorio.

Building independence.

And Vittorio realized his son had trusted him emotionally more than he trusted the organization structurally.

That distinction hurt.

It also taught him exactly what had to change.
