Chapter 8

The room changed.
Emma stared at her brother.
Mark sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked like a man with no strategy left.
“How much?”
Emma asked.
He rubbed his thumb across his wedding ring finger even though he was not married.
A nervous habit from childhood.
“About nine hundred thousand.”
Her eyes widened.
“Why?”
Mark laughed once.
Dry.
“Because I was failing.”
Bell Holdings had one development Mark personally championed.
Colorado luxury residences.
Cost overruns.
Permitting delays.
Contractor disputes.
Mark hid losses from Richard.
Then moved money from reserve accounts to keep the project alive.
Not for yachts.
Not gambling.
Not drugs.
Pride.
A desperate attempt to make one thing succeed before his father decided he was useless.
Ethan discovered it while reviewing shared logistics accounts.
Emma whispered:
“What did he do?”
“He confronted me.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Did Dad know?”
“No.”
Mark’s eyes filled.
“Ethan gave me thirty days to tell him myself.”
Vittorio looked at Mark.
That sounded like Ethan.
Punish later.
Give someone one chance first.
Mark continued.
“He said if I confessed and repaid it, he would help me restructure the project.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Her dead husband had been helping everyone.
Planning his exit.
Protecting employees.
Giving Mark a chance.
Trying to keep twins out of family politics.
All while saying almost none of it to her.
That hurt too.
“Then he died.”
Mark nodded.
“And suddenly Dad made you co-executor.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was already named.”
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
Ethan had chosen Richard and Mark as executors despite knowing Mark stole money.
Why?
That did not fit.
Emma saw it too.
“Ethan wouldn't do that.”
Mark’s face tightened.
“The document is three years old.”
Before the theft.
Before the twins.
Before the current conflict.
An outdated estate plan had placed power in the hands of people Ethan no longer fully trusted.
That was realistic.
And disastrous.
Mark looked at Emma.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I should have read everything.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“I should never have blocked the door.”
Emma’s eyes hardened.
“No.”
No forgiveness yet.
Then Vittorio’s attorney entered with newly obtained material.
A draft amendment to Ethan’s estate plan.
Created twelve days before his death.
It removed Richard as co-executor.
Removed Mark too.
Named Emma sole personal representative.
Emma stared.
“Did he sign it?”
The attorney’s expression changed.
“No.”
The meeting was scheduled for the morning after Ethan died.
Vittorio lowered his eyes.
One day.
That was all.
Then another file appeared.
A recorded voice memo.
Ethan had made it the night before his death.
Recipient field:
DAD.
Vittorio’s face changed.
May you like
His son had recorded something for him.
He had never received it.
