Chapter 14

The twins were named two days later.
Emma invited both families to the hospital room.
Only five people.
No capos.
No lawyers.
No business associates.
Vittorio arrived first.
Richard came second.
They nodded at each other.
Nothing more.
Mark stood near the window.
Still bruised from the memorial kitchen.
Still ashamed.
Emma sat in bed with one baby in each arm.
She looked exhausted.
Alive.
In control.
“This is Clara Elise DeLuca.”
She looked down at her daughter.
Then toward the boy.
“And this is Ethan Daniel DeLuca.”
Richard stopped breathing.
Mark’s eyes filled.
Vittorio looked toward Richard.
Daniel.
Not replacement.
Memory.
A name.
Nothing more.
Richard’s voice broke.
“Emma…”
She raised one hand.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
“I chose it because Daniel existed.”
A pause.
“Not because this baby owes him anything.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
Then Vittorio looked at his grandson.
Ethan Daniel.
His own son’s name too.
Emma saw the emotion.
“This doesn't make him Ethan again.”
Vittorio’s hand tightened.
“I know.”
“You say that now.”
His eyes lifted.
Emma’s voice stayed gentle but firm.
“So I'm going to say it now too.”
Silence.
“My children will know both families.”
She looked at Richard.
“No one takes them.”
Then Vittorio.
“No one assigns them futures.”
Then Mark.
“No one uses them to repair adult mistakes.”
Mark lowered his eyes.
Emma continued.
“And no one tells me what Ethan wanted without showing me the whole sentence.”
That one belonged to everyone.
Vittorio almost smiled.
Richard almost did too.
Then Emma gave Vittorio a sealed folder.
“What is this?”
“Ethan’s restructuring plan.”
He opened it.
A detailed proposal.
Move certain DeLuca businesses into fully legitimate governance.
Remove automatic family succession.
Create professional boards.
Separate residential property from organizational operations.
Reduce the number of capos using the main estate.
Vittorio read silently.
It was radical.
For the old DeLuca structure.
It was also sensible.
He looked at Emma.
“Did he discuss this with you?”
“Some of it.”
“Did he think I would refuse?”
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt.
Then she added:
“He also thought you might surprise him.”
Vittorio’s thumb moved over his signet ring.
The room waited.
Finally:
“Then we review it.”
Not accept blindly.
Not reject from pride.
Review.
Emma’s shoulders relaxed.
That was enough.
Then Mark’s phone vibrated.
He read the message.
His face changed.
Richard saw.
“What?”
The independent Bell review had found another transfer connected to Mark’s missing money.
$200,000 had been returned anonymously three weeks earlier.
Mark stared.
“I didn't return that.”
Richard frowned.
“Then who did?”
The transfer originated from Ethan’s personal account.
Ethan had already begun covering Mark’s theft before his death.
May you like
He had been quietly giving Mark one last chance to confess without destroying Bell Holdings.
Even dead, Ethan had left them another moral debt to repay.
