Chapter 9

Vittorio did not play the voice memo immediately.
He looked at Emma.
“This may be private.”
She shook her head.
“If it's about the children, we hear it together.”
He nodded.
Mark started to leave.
Emma looked at him.
“Stay.”
He stopped.
“You need to hear what Ethan thought too.”
Vittorio pressed play.
His son’s voice filled the hospital room.
Tired.
Steady.
Dad, I don't know how to say this without making it sound like I blame you for everything.
Vittorio’s eyes closed.
Ethan continued.
I don't.
You gave me things most fathers couldn't.
Security.
Work.
A name people respected.
But sometimes that name enters the room before I do.
Vittorio looked toward the twins.
The recording continued.
I don't want that for my kids.
Not the boy.
Not the girl.
Either both children get to choose their lives, or Emma takes them somewhere they can.
Emma began crying silently.
Ethan spoke about Richard too.
Richard thinks moving away from you fixes everything.
He doesn't understand that control can wear a quiet suit too.
Mark looked down.
Emma stared.
Ethan had seen both fathers clearly.
Then:
I asked Richard for help finding a place because I thought he could help us leave without turning it into a war.
I was wrong to keep that from Emma.
That part is on me.
Emma covered her mouth.
Her husband knew.
He knew secrecy itself was betrayal.
He simply died before correcting it.
The recording continued.
Mark needs to tell Richard what he did.
If he does, help him fix it.
If he doesn't, don't let his shame become Emma’s problem.
Mark’s shoulders shook.
Then Ethan spoke directly to Vittorio.
Dad, I need you to hear the part you will hate.
Vittorio’s hand tightened.
If I have a son, he is not your successor.
Not automatically.
He is not me again.
He is not a second chance.
He is a baby.
Vittorio lowered his head.
No one looked at him.
They gave him privacy without leaving.
Then Ethan’s voice softened.
But I want him to know you.
I want both of them to know you.
If you can love them without assigning them a future, don't let Richard convince Emma she has to choose one family.
There was a long pause.
Then one final sentence.
And Dad—
Richard is hiding why he wants the boy.
The recording ended.
Everyone looked at Mark.
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Emma’s eyes narrowed.
“Then who does?”
Mark hesitated.
Slowly, he looked toward the door.
“Mom did.”
Emma went still.
Their mother had died nine years earlier.
Vittorio frowned.
“What does your mother have to do with this?”
Mark swallowed.
“Dad lost a son before Emma was born.”
Emma stared at him.
“What?”
Richard Bell had another child.
May you like
A boy.
And Emma had never been told.
