Chapter 11

Cesare did not throw Julian out of the family.

He did something Julian found harder.

He stopped protecting him.

The outside counsel received everything.

Investment records.

Museum contract emails.

Cloakroom footage.

The prosthetic purchase.

Julian’s written statement.

Vanessa’s communications.

Ethan’s company bid was formally removed from consideration.

Julian resigned from the foundation board before they could vote on his suspension.

His investment lost most of its value within months.

Those were business consequences.

Avice was different.

Julian asked to see her.

The therapist recommended short contact first.

They met in Cesare’s garden.

Avice remained beside a fountain while Julian crouched several feet away.

“I lied to you.”

Avice looked at him.

“About the baby?”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

She stared at the ground.

“Why?”

Julian could have said adult problems.

Money.

Fear.

Confusion.

Instead:

“Because Daddy wanted something and made a bad choice.”

Avice thought about that.

“More than me?”

Julian’s face collapsed.

“No.”

“But you picked it.”

Children had a cruel ability to make complicated decisions simple.

Julian nodded.

“Yes.”

Avice walked toward Cesare.

She did not hug her father goodbye.

Julian accepted it.

Later, Cesare found him sitting alone near the garden gate.

“You're going to fix this?”

Julian shook his head.

“I don't know if I can.”

Cesare looked toward Avice through the window.

“Wrong question.”

Julian looked up.

“You become someone worth trusting.”

May you like

Cesare paused.

“Whether she gives you the reward you want or not.”
