Chapter 15

The following year, the ocean-conservation gala returned.

Smaller.

Quieter.

No family announcements.

No engagement reveal.

No pregnancy photographs.

Cesare nearly declined to attend.

Avice wanted to go.

“They have turtles.”

That settled it.

She wore a simple blue dress and carried another handmade sea turtle.

Julian arrived separately.

His relationship with Avice had improved slowly.

He attended therapy.

He stopped promising things he could not guarantee.

He stopped asking Cesare whether Avice had forgiven him.

Most importantly, he stopped treating every affectionate moment as proof that everything was repaired.

Sometimes Avice ran to him.

Sometimes she chose Cesare.

Julian accepted both.

Inside the donor lounge, Avice stopped beside the same table where Vanessa had pulled away her chair.

A new chair stood beside Cesare’s.

Avice stared at it.

Cesare waited.

She climbed onto it herself.

Julian remained several feet away.

Avice unfolded the paper turtle.

On its shell she had written three names in uneven letters.

AVICE.

GRANDPA.

DADDY.

Julian saw it.

His eyes filled.

He did not move closer.

After dinner, Avice carried the turtle toward the aquarium wall.

Julian followed at a distance.

She turned.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Hold this.”

She handed him the paper turtle while she pressed both hands against the aquarium glass.

Julian held it carefully.

Nothing more.

Cesare watched from the table.

A year earlier, Julian had allowed a fake child to become more important than his real daughter’s trust.

Now Avice had given him something fragile again.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Just a paper turtle.

May you like

Julian held it as though that distinction mattered.

Because this time, it did.
