Chapter 12

Vanessa finally stopped minimizing her part.
Her attorney arranged a formal statement concerning the gala incident and the false pregnancy.
She admitted inventing it.
She admitted Ethan helped.
She admitted Julian eventually discovered the truth and chose to continue it.
Then she spoke about Avice.
“I hated that she noticed everything.”
The investigator asked what she meant.
Vanessa explained that Avice would stare at her stomach after hugs.
She noticed the shape changed.
She asked why the baby never moved.
She once opened the cloakroom door at the wrong time.
“I started thinking if she kept talking, Julian would panic and end everything.”
So Vanessa began telling her she was jealous.
That Daddy would have a new baby.
That little girls who caused trouble could be sent away.
The orphanage threat at the gala was simply the cruelest version of something she had been saying privately.
Vanessa cried while admitting it.
Cesare did not attend.
He read the statement later.
He did not need to watch her cry.
Ethan’s explanation was simpler.
He needed the contract.
Cole Marine Holdings was more financially unstable than he disclosed.
Without the museum work, lenders were unlikely to extend another credit line.
He convinced himself the fake pregnancy was Vanessa’s personal lie and therefore none of his business.
Then he paid for the prosthetics.
Then he helped hide appointments.
Then he attacked Cesare when Avice exposed everything.
At every stage Ethan told himself he was only protecting his sister or his company.
That was how betrayal had grown.

Not from one enormous decision.
From a sequence of smaller ones no one wanted to stop making.
