Chapter 14

The last confrontation did not happen in a ballroom.

It happened inside the empty donor lounge six months later.

Cesare invited Julian.

Vanessa and Ethan attended with attorneys for the final transfer of remaining personal items and museum-related property.

Avice was nowhere near the building.

Cesare insisted on that.

The floral pregnancy prosthetic sat inside a clear evidence bag on the table.

Nobody wanted to look at it.

Vanessa finally said:

“I’m sorry.”

Cesare nodded.

He did not forgive her.

He did not refuse the apology either.

Ethan signed the remaining documents relating to his company’s removal from the procurement process.

Then he looked at Julian.

“You could've exposed us the day you found out.”

Julian answered:

“I know.”

“You kept it alive.”

“I know.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“And somehow I’m the villain.”

Cesare spoke.

“There isn't one villain.”

Everyone looked toward him.

“That is the problem.”

Vanessa lied.

Ethan financed it.

Julian preserved it.

Cesare had built a family where business loyalty and personal loyalty were so entangled that each of them found reasons to keep going.

Even Avice’s place beside him at the gala had become something Vanessa believed could be reassigned.

Cesare picked up the sealed prosthetic.

“This almost replaced a real child in this family.”

Julian looked down.

Cesare handed the bag to outside counsel.

“Store it with the case material.”

Vanessa seemed surprised.

“You’re keeping it?”

“No.”

Cesare looked toward the aquarium wall.

“I’m refusing to turn it into another family relic.”

The meeting ended.

No threats.

No private punishment.

May you like

No one disappeared.

The consequences they had already created were enough.
