Chapter 13

The foundation investigation lasted months.

Julian’s investment itself was not illegal.

Failing to disclose the conflict while advocating for Ethan’s contract violated foundation policy and created serious governance concerns.

The museum canceled the procurement process and reopened bidding under outside supervision.

Cole Marine Holdings did not qualify.

Julian paid the financial price through his collapsing investment and resigned positions he had expected to hold for years.

Vanessa moved out of Boston.

The relationship with Julian ended completely.

Her conduct toward Avice remained part of a separate legal process following the gala assault and evidence of earlier emotional mistreatment.

Ethan lost his museum access and most professional connections to the Lombardi organization.

Cesare faced consequences too.

The gala recordings showed him striking Ethan and Vanessa.

His anger had followed attacks on himself and Avice, but that did not make every act beyond scrutiny.

He cooperated.

The resulting misdemeanor matter ended with fines, required counseling, and conditions he would once have considered humiliating.

He completed them.

More importantly, Cesare changed the museum.

No family member could bid on contracts without full conflict disclosure.

No board member could privately pressure procurement staff.

Family status no longer counted as qualification.

One older capo complained.

“We’re turning into a corporation.”

Cesare answered:

“We became a charity whenever we wanted tax advantages. We can survive behaving like one.”

That ended the discussion.

Then Avice brought Cesare another paper sea turtle.

This one had a reinforced cardboard shell.

“Why stronger?”

She smiled.

“So nobody can squish it.”

Cesare looked at the little turtle.

Children remembered things adults desperately wanted to become metaphors.

For Avice, it was still simply the toy Vanessa stepped on.

Cesare decided not to turn it into anything else.
