Chapter 10

The email was real.

Luciano remembered writing it only after reading the second paragraph.

Catherine had been dead for three months.

The fencing club was struggling after several major donors paused contributions following her death.

Luciano wanted nothing to do with fundraising.

Every room reminded him of her.

Grant had emailed about cash-flow problems.

Luciano replied:

Move whatever you need temporarily. Keep Catherine’s programs running. I don't want to discuss money until after the memorial season.

Grant had kept the message.

Luciano stared at it.

“You told me the transfers were for the club.”

“They were.”

“At first.”

Grant nodded.

That was the major difference.

The first $250,000 had not gone into Grant’s Westchester project.

It went into operating expenses that kept Catherine’s youth programs functioning during a genuine shortfall.

Luciano had authorized it.

Then a second transfer happened.

Grant used the same broad instruction.

Part went to the club.

Part went to Westchester.

Odessa knew.

By the third transfer, almost all of it went to the development project.

The betrayal had grown gradually inside an instruction Luciano himself gave.

Three earlier clues changed meaning.

Luciano’s signature was real because he had agreed to temporary fund movement.

The reserve requirement was removed later because Odessa and Grant knew their expanded use violated the original purpose.

And Grant’s confidence that Luciano had “approved everything” came from an email broad enough to weaponize.

Luciano looked at him.

“You took my grief and turned it into standing permission.”

Grant reacted.

“You told me to handle it.”

“I told you to keep Catherine's programs running.”

“The expansion would have made money for them eventually.”

“That isn't what you told me.”

Grant leaned back.

“You weren't listening to anything.”

Luciano stopped.

Because that part was true.

For months after Catherine died, he signed documents without reading them.

Avoided board meetings.

Ignored Odessa’s updates.

Told Grant to solve problems.

He had abandoned responsibility while keeping authority.

Grant exploited it.

Odessa concealed it.

But Luciano had created the vacuum.

Then Grant said something even harder.

“Catherine warned you about me.”

Luciano’s face changed.

“What?”

“Six months before she died.”

Grant looked toward the window.

“She told you I pushed too hard on expansion.”

Luciano remembered.

Catherine in bed.

Tired.

Annoyed.

“Grant treats every charity like it needs to become a business.”

Luciano had kissed her forehead.

“He means well.”

Then changed the subject.

The major twist was not that Luciano secretly approved theft.

He had not.

It was that the warning, the authority and the first transfer had all passed directly through him.

He had been close enough to stop the betrayal before it started.

He simply had not listened.
