Chapter 8

The foundation board suspended Odessa and Grant.

Luciano also stepped aside temporarily from decisions involving the youth fund.

Several relatives thought that was unnecessary.

He disagreed.

His signature had enabled the first transfer.

Whether he understood it or not, pretending otherwise would make the review meaningless.

An outside trustee took control.

The immediate goal was simple.

Protect the remaining scholarship money.

The Westchester project was frozen.

Architectural deposits that could be recovered were recovered.

A land sale was explored.

Grant objected.

Selling now would crystallize his losses.

Luciano’s response was brief.

“That is no longer the charity’s problem.”

Then Grant retaliated.

He circulated copies of Luciano’s signed authorization to senior family members.

The implication was clear.

Luciano approved everything and was now destroying Grant to protect his reputation.

It worked on some people.

An uncle called.

“You signed it.”

“I did.”

“Then how is this all Grant?”

“It isn't.”

The uncle went quiet.

Luciano continued.

“I signed something I didn't read carefully enough. Grant used it for something I had already refused.”

That answer traveled through the family faster than denial would have.

Grant had expected Luciano to hide his mistake.

Instead Luciano admitted it.

The tactic weakened.

Then the fencing club’s IT manager found something.

The original reserve-policy summary had been edited from Grant’s laptop.

But Grant was not the user logged in when the change occurred.

Odessa was.

She had removed the restriction herself.

When confronted, she stopped denying it.

“Grant said the trustees would never approve the loan if they saw the reserve.”

“So you deleted it.”

“From the summary.”

“You're describing it like formatting.”

Odessa’s voice rose.

“I thought the money would be back in sixty days!”

“It wasn't.”

“I know that now.”

Luciano looked at her.

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“You knew it three months ago when children started losing scholarships.”

Odessa stopped.

That was the point where a bad decision became an ongoing betrayal.

And no explanation about family loyalty could carry her past it.
