Chapter 13

Recovery took months.
The Westchester land sold for less than Grant had paid.
Architectural deposits were partially recovered.
One vendor returned an excessive consulting payment rather than fight the foundation.
The youth fund remained short.
Luciano covered part of the gap personally.
The independent trustees accepted the contribution only after documenting that it gave him no additional control.
Luciano agreed.
That detail would once have offended him.
Now he understood why it existed.
The scholarship reductions were reversed for the following season.
The families affected received explanations without private Moretti drama attached.
They did not need to know who betrayed whom.
They needed to know whether their children could keep fencing.
Grant lost his senior role with the family businesses.
The financial findings were referred through normal legal and insurance channels.
He contested several allegations.
Some issues remained unresolved.
Odessa faced separate consequences for falsifying internal records and for what she had done to Mabel at the benefit.
Luciano faced scrutiny for striking Grant and Odessa.
He did not claim being a father exempted him.
The circumstances explained his reaction.
They did not make every action lawful.
He accepted the legal resolution his attorneys negotiated, including fines and anger-management requirements.
Then came something harder.
Mabel started checking her purse obsessively before leaving the house.
“Everything there?”
Luciano asked one morning.
She nodded.
Then checked again.
Her therapist explained that being publicly searched had affected her sense of control over her own belongings.
Luciano hated hearing that.
Money could refill Catherine’s fund.
Nothing could make Mabel forget eighty adults watching while someone called her a thief.
So Luciano stopped trying to tell her it was over.
Instead, he asked permission before opening her purse.
Every time.
Even when she asked him to find something inside.
“Can I look?”
Mabel usually said yes.
Sometimes no.
May you like
He respected both.
Accountability, Luciano discovered, often looked embarrassingly small compared with the harm that made it necessary.
