Chapter 12

The Westchester property went up for sale.
Grant fought it until his attorney explained that without recovering money, his exposure would only worsen.
The sale would not restore everything.
It would restore enough to protect the youth program.
Odessa agreed to surrender her remaining authority over the foundation.
She also agreed to cooperate with the financial review.
Luciano met her once before the formal statement.
She looked tired.
No diamonds.
No carefully arranged appearance.
“Does Mabel hate me?”
Luciano looked at her.
“She’s four.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“She asks why you did it.”
Odessa closed her eyes.
“What do you tell her?”
“That you made a cruel choice because you were trying to hide something.”
Odessa nodded.
“You don't tell her I love her?”
“I don't tell her what you feel.”
Odessa looked surprised.
“You can tell her that someday if the people helping her think hearing from you is good for her.”
The old Luciano would have decided the answer himself.
This version was learning that protecting Mabel did not mean owning every future decision.
Grant entered with his attorney.
He looked at Odessa.
“You're cooperating?”
“Yes.”
“You're handing them everything?”
“Yes.”
Grant laughed bitterly.
“For Luciano.”
Odessa shook her head.
“For me.”
That stopped him.
She had spent months telling herself every decision was for her brother.
Removing the reserve.
Signing misleading forms.
Helping frame Mabel.
Now she finally understood that loyalty had become an excuse to avoid admitting what she chose.
Grant turned toward Luciano.
“You'll destroy the project.”
“The project is already finished.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
Luciano pushed the sale authorization across the table.
Grant stared at it.
For years Grant had treated the expansion as proof he could build something as significant as Luciano.
Losing it meant more than money.
It meant accepting that ambition had become entitlement.
He did not sign.
May you like
He didn't need to.
The foundation controlled enough of the project to proceed without him.
