Chapter 6

Luciano recognized the signature.
It looked real.
That did not mean he remembered signing it.
The authorization was dated eleven months earlier.
Three months after Catherine died.
The document approved “temporary inter-fund liquidity support for Moretti athletic development initiatives.”
The wording was broad.
Grant claimed it covered the Westchester project.
Luciano claimed he had never heard of Moretti Athletic Development at the time.
The accountants searched his office records.
The document appeared inside a stack of foundation papers Luciano signed after a memorial dinner for Catherine.
His assistant’s notes showed he reviewed the stack for less than ten minutes.
That embarrassed him.
Grant used the signature aggressively.
“You approved it.”
“I approved temporary support.”
“That’s what I used.”
“For over a million dollars?”
“You didn't put a limit.”
Luciano stared at him.
Grant had found the weakness immediately.
A vague authorization.
A grieving chairman.
A foundation accustomed to family trust.
Luciano wanted to call it fraud.
His attorney stopped him.
“Grant may have exceeded the intent. But your signature matters.”
Luciano hated that sentence.
Odessa used it too.
“You keep acting like we broke into a vault.”
“You knew Catherine's fund wasn't supposed to finance Grant’s business plan.”
“The club needed expansion.”
“Then ask.”
“You would've said no.”
“I did say no.”
“Exactly.”
Luciano leaned back.
Odessa had just admitted the truth.
The authorization was not why they moved the money.
It was what they planned to hide behind if anyone discovered it.
Then the independent accountants found another clue.
Before the first transfer, Catherine’s charity had maintained a reserve requirement.
At least $1.5 million had to remain untouched to guarantee multi-year scholarship commitments.
Someone removed that rule from an internal financial summary.
The original policy still existed.
The summary used by the trustees did not show it.
“Who prepared the summary?”
The accountant answered.
“Grant.”
Luciano looked toward Odessa.
She looked away.
Now the question was no longer whether Grant stretched Luciano’s authorization.

Someone had actively removed the one rule that would have prevented the transfers.
And Odessa knew more than she was saying.
