Chapter 10

The patient had been Ralph.

Not for his heart.

For gambling addiction.

The truth came from Ralph himself.

He asked Rocco to meet at the arena before sunrise.

No Bernice.

No Laine.

Ralph placed a treatment discharge summary on the table.

Three years earlier, after retiring from daily family leadership, he had begun gambling heavily.

Sports books.

Private card rooms.

Online accounts.

He lost nearly $600,000 before Bernice discovered it.

She forced him into treatment.

Then she hid everything.

Rocco stared at his father.

“You never told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“What does this have to do with the foundation?”

Ralph looked down.

“Some of the first money she moved was for me.”

That changed everything.

Bernice had not begun stealing to rescue Laine.

She began years earlier to hide Ralph’s gambling losses and treatment from the family.

When Laine’s business collapsed later, Bernice already had a method.

Move money temporarily.

Replace it later.

Use Ralph’s credentials.

Call everything family money.

Protect everyone from humiliation.

By the time Mia saw the blue envelopes, Bernice was trying to conceal years of overlapping transfers.

Ralph knew about the earliest ones.

He did not know she continued.

But when Mia accused Bernice of stealing, Ralph understood immediately what might be exposed.

That was why his expression changed.

That was why he grabbed for Mia after she spoke.

Not because he wanted to hurt the child.

Because he was terrified a four-year-old was about to uncover the secret he had spent three years hiding.

Rocco felt sick.

Three clues finally aligned.

Ralph’s unexplained panic.

Bernice repeatedly describing financial transfers as helping “the family.”

The cash ledger using Ralph’s credentials long after his supposed retirement.

Mia had been starved not simply because she saw Bernice taking money.

She threatened to expose the secret at the center of Bernice and Ralph’s marriage.

Ralph’s addiction.

Bernice’s cover-up.

Then Laine’s debts layered on top.

Rocco looked at his father.

“You watched them punish her.”

Ralph’s eyes filled.

“I thought your mother would make her admit she misunderstood.”

“She was four.”

“I know.”

“You knew she hadn't misunderstood.”

Ralph stopped breathing for a second.

Then nodded.

That was the major betrayal.

Bernice had designed the punishment.

Laine had participated.

But Ralph had known why Mia was telling the truth.

And he let his granddaughter suffer because the truth embarrassed him.
