Chapter 11

Rocco did not expose Ralph’s addiction publicly.

Not because he intended to hide financial misconduct.

Because medical treatment itself was not the crime.

The financial records would go where they needed to go.

Ralph’s health history remained private except where legally relevant.

That distinction mattered.

Bernice hated it.

“You'll protect his dignity but destroy mine?”

Rocco looked at her across Daniel’s office.

“You stole from children.”

“I replaced most of it.”

“You starved my daughter.”

“I was disciplining her.”

“No.”

Rocco’s voice stayed level.

“You were trying to force a witness to change her story.”

Bernice flinched at the word witness.

“She is four.”

“Yes.”

“And she understood what you were doing better than half the adults in that arena.”

Bernice began crying.

She explained her logic.

Ralph had been the patriarch.

If the family learned about his addiction, his reputation would collapse.

When Laine’s business failed, Bernice could not bear another child being publicly humiliated.

She had spent forty years keeping the Carusos looking strong.

Every financial transfer became temporary in her mind.

Every lie prevented a scandal.

Every silence protected someone.

“Until Mia,” Rocco said.

Bernice looked away.

Mia had no interest in family image.

She saw blue envelopes.

She saw Grandma put them into a bag.

She said so.

When Bernice told her she was mistaken, Mia repeated it.

When Laine called her a liar, Mia said she would tell Daddy.

Bernice panicked.

The equipment cleaning began as punishment.

Then coercion.

Then cruelty.

By the third day Bernice was no longer trying to teach anything.

She was trying to break the child's certainty.

Rocco stood.

Bernice looked up.

“What happens now?”

“For once?”

May you like

He opened the office door.

“You don't get to decide that inside the family.”
