Chapter 5

Ralph demanded a full copy of the financial records.
Rocco gave it to him.
That surprised Bernice.
“What are you doing?”
“Finding out whether Dad approved any of this.”
“You know how forgetful he's become.”
Ralph slammed one hand onto the table.
“I am sitting right here.”
Bernice sighed.
“This is what I've been dealing with.”
The sentence sounded practiced.
Rocco remembered hearing versions of it for months.
Dad misplaced his keys again.
Dad forgot a meeting.
Dad approved something twice.
Dad is getting older.
Rocco had believed his mother because Ralph was sixty-nine and had stepped back from leadership.
But retirement was not dementia.
Rocco asked Ralph to undergo a medical evaluation voluntarily.
His father was furious.
Then he agreed.
The results showed normal age-related changes.
Nothing explaining dozens of phantom approvals.
Meanwhile, the audit found that Laine’s company had received almost $290,000 from foundation-linked transactions.
Laine admitted taking some of the money.
Not knowingly from scholarships, she insisted.
“Mom told me Dad set up a temporary family loan.”
Rocco stared at her.
“Did you see a loan agreement?”
“No.”
“Board approval?”
“No.”
“Why would you believe foundation payments to your company were a family loan?”
“Because Mom handled it.”
Bernice finally lost patience.
“I was trying to keep this family together.”
Rocco turned toward her.
“With children's scholarship money?”
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
“Then explain it.”
She stood.
“You have more money than any of us could spend in ten lifetimes, yet every dollar has to go through your lawyers, committees, audits—”
“The foundation isn't my checking account.”
“It was built with family money.”
“For children who need it.”
Bernice looked away.
That was the first visible crack.
Later, Caroline contacted Rocco privately.
She had remembered something.
The night before Rocco left for his five-day meeting, Mia had wandered into the equipment office.
Bernice and Laine were inside.
Mia came out carrying a blue envelope and saying:
“Grandma put the kid money in Aunt Laine’s bag.”
Caroline had laughed at first.
She thought Mia was describing something she did not understand.
Bernice had not laughed.
She had immediately taken Mia away.
Rocco finally knew why the punishment began.
May you like
His daughter had not lied.
She had described exactly what she saw.
