Chapter 12

Laine gave a formal statement two days later.
She admitted helping Bernice enforce the punishment.
She admitted blocking Mia’s video calls.
She admitted accepting money without proper documentation.
She did not admit knowingly stealing scholarship funds because, according to her, she genuinely believed Bernice controlled private family accounts.
Investigators would decide how much that distinction mattered.
Rocco did not.
For him, one part required no investigation.
“You heard her asking for food.”
Laine cried.
“Yes.”
“And?”
“Mom said she'd already eaten.”
“Did you believe her?”
Laine looked down.
“Not by the second day.”
Rocco stared at his sister.
“Then why didn't you feed her?”
Laine's answer was almost inaudible.
“Because Mom told me not to undermine her.”
That sentence explained more than Laine intended.
The Caruso family hierarchy had trained grown adults to treat obedience like morality.
Laine knew something was wrong.
She chose rank.
Ralph knew Mia was telling the truth.
He chose shame.
Staff knew Mia was hungry.
They chose job security.
Bernice knew exactly what she was doing.
She chose control.
Rocco had spent years at the top of that same structure.
He could not pretend the culture appeared from nowhere.
Caroline came to see him after giving her statement.
“I should've brought Mia food.”
“You were afraid you'd lose your job.”
“Yes.”
Rocco looked at her.
“That should never have been a choice.”
Caroline nodded.
Rocco offered her no dramatic reward.
He did something more practical.
He rewrote the household reporting system.
Any child-safety concern bypassed family hierarchy.
Staff could call an independent safeguarding consultant.
No relative could countermand meals, medication, school access, or medical care without documented authority.
Several older family members mocked the policy.
Rocco kept it.
Mia returned to preschool.
For the first week she hid crackers in her backpack.
Rocco found them.
He did not remove them.
Hannah told him security sometimes began with allowing a child to know food would still be there later.

So every morning Rocco added one fresh snack beside the old ones.
Eventually Mia stopped hiding them.
