Chapter 13

The financial investigation took months.
Some money was recoverable immediately because it remained in the arena storage bag.
Some had been spent on Laine’s debts.
Some covered Ralph’s treatment and earlier gambling losses.
Some remained difficult to trace.
The foundation board removed Bernice from every financial and administrative role.
Laine resigned.
Ralph surrendered his honorary chairman title.
For the first time since Rocco was a child, neither parent held formal authority inside a Caruso institution.
Ralph accepted the consequence quietly.
Bernice did not.
“This family existed before your lawyers and policies.”
Rocco responded:
“And Mia existed before your reputation.”
Bernice stopped speaking.
Rocco also faced scrutiny over what happened in the equipment corridor.
He had punched Ralph after Ralph swung.
He had slapped Laine after stopping her from dragging Mia away.
The circumstances mattered.
They did not automatically erase his own use of force.
His attorney advised cooperation.
Rocco agreed.
He would not tell Mia adults had rules and then invent exceptions for himself.
The matter eventually moved toward a negotiated misdemeanor resolution for his conduct toward Laine, with fines and anger-management requirements.
Rocco accepted it.
Ralph never pursued separate charges over the punch.
Rocco did not ask him to withdraw anything.
Their relationship remained strained.
The harder question was contact with Mia.
Hannah recommended no unsupervised visits with Bernice.
Ralph could potentially have supervised contact later if he demonstrated accountability.
Laine would need to rebuild trust separately.
Mia was not asked to forgive anyone.
That became one of Rocco’s firmest rules.
One evening she asked:
“Grandpa bad?”
Rocco thought carefully.
“Grandpa did something bad when he should've protected you.”
“Grandma bad?”
“Grandma hurt you.”
Mia waited.
Rocco added:
“People are more complicated than one word.”
She frowned.
“Complicated means bad?”
Rocco almost smiled.
“No.”
May you like
He pulled her blanket higher.
“It means Daddy needs better answers.”
