Chapter 12

The independent household review found failures Alexander had not expected.

Some belonged to Veronica.

Some belonged to him.

Employees had no clear way to verify unusual instructions supposedly coming from family members.

Security staff assumed domestic decisions were outside their responsibility unless physical danger was obvious.

Household workers feared that challenging a future spouse could cost them employment.

Sofia’s nanny structure had become too dependent on informal arrangements after Caroline died.

Rebecca summarized it brutally.

“Veronica exploited the system.”

Alexander nodded.

“She did not invent every weakness in it.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

That answer was difficult.

It was also necessary.

Alexander hired a professional family-office administrator who did not report through relatives or romantic partners.

Staffing changes affecting Sofia required confirmation from two authorized adults.

Security could intervene when any adult physically disciplined the child, regardless of family status.

Employees received written reporting protections.

Evelyn stayed during the transition.

Not forever.

She reminded Alexander weekly.

Sofia continued therapy.

She stopped asking whether her clothes made her a servant.

But she refused polished black shoes.

Alexander removed them from her wardrobe for now.

One morning she saw him polishing his own dress shoes.

She froze in the doorway.

Alexander noticed immediately.

He put the cloth down.

“Want me to stop?”

Sofia looked at the shoes.

Then at him.

“You do it?”

“Yes.”

“Because servant?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because they’re my shoes.”

She thought about that.

Then walked closer.

“Can I do mine?”

“Only if you want.”

She brought over one tiny pink flat.

Alexander gave her a clean cloth.

No black polish.

No stool.

No adult pressing a foot toward her.

She rubbed the shoe twice.

Then became bored and left.

Alexander stared at the abandoned flat and nearly cried.

May you like

Not because she polished it.

Because she stopped when she wanted to.
