Chapter 13

Veronica requested mediation.

Rebecca expected Alexander to refuse.

He agreed.

The meeting took place in a downtown law office.

Veronica looked different without the estate around her.

Less powerful.

Still composed.

“I never intended to hurt Sofia.”

Alexander said nothing.

“I lost control.”

“Yes.”

“Maison Privé put enormous pressure on the launch.”

“You had an equity agreement.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted the money.”

“It wasn’t only money.”

Alexander waited.

Veronica folded her hands.

“I spent ten years building relationships in that world.”

“What world?”

“People like you.”

He almost laughed.

“People like me?”

“Wealth. Families. Estates. Access.”

Her voice tightened.

“I was always the person invited in through somebody else.”

Alexander understood something then.

Veronica had built her adult identity around entering rooms where she once felt socially inferior.

She had become obsessed with never being mistaken for staff.

Never being beneath anyone.

Caroline’s background—daughter of a hotel housekeeper who later married into extraordinary wealth—offended that hierarchy.

Sofia carried the same history.

Veronica could not tolerate the idea that a child connected to working-class people could outrank her simply by being Alexander’s daughter.

It explained the language.

A servant’s child belongs on her knees.

Rebecca asked:

“Did Maison Privé tell you to say that?”

Veronica looked down.

“No.”

“Did anyone tell you to shove Sofia?”

“No.”

“Did anyone tell you to force her to polish your shoes?”

“No.”

Those answers mattered.

The business scheme explained the staged situation.

It did not excuse what Veronica chose to do once the child resisted.

Veronica looked at Alexander.

“I loved you.”

“You wanted my life.”

Her eyes filled.

“That isn’t fair.”

“No.”

Alexander’s voice remained calm.

“Fair would have been deciding you couldn’t live with a man whose daughter came before your ambitions and leaving.”

Veronica wiped one tear.

“What happens now?”

“The civil claims proceed.”

“And us?”

Alexander stared at her.

“There is no us.”

May you like

She nodded.

For the first time, he believed she understood that.
