Chapter 7

Sofia remembered the shoes before she remembered the words.

Dr. Brooks called Alexander after a play session.

“She lined up doll shoes.”

Alexander waited.

“She made one doll kneel and clean them.”

His jaw tightened.

“Did she say Veronica made her do that before?”

“No.”

That frustrated him.

Dr. Brooks heard it.

“Do not fill the gap yourself.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Alexander stood near the window.

“What can you tell me?”

“That Sofia is processing hierarchy through play. One person is allowed to stand. One person has to serve.”

“Why?”

“We may learn more. We may not.”

The next useful information came from an adult.

Sofia’s former weekend nanny, Rachel Moore, contacted Evelyn after hearing the engagement had ended.

Rachel had left three months earlier.

Alexander remembered being told she wanted graduate school.

She did.

But that was only half the reason.

Veronica had been making her job impossible.

Changing Sofia’s sleep schedule.

Canceling outings.

Insisting Rachel use a service entrance when Veronica had guests.

Once Veronica told Rachel:

“After the wedding, this household will understand levels.”

Rachel hated the wording.

She resigned rather than fight.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Alexander asked.

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Because Veronica said you wanted the changes.”

Again.

His name.

His authority.

Used as a tool because people believed asking him directly might insult him.

Alexander was becoming tired of discovering that Veronica’s deception worked partly because of the culture he had created.

Rachel had one more detail.

Two weeks before resigning, she found a stack of Maison Privé training materials in Veronica’s dressing room.

One page described a household demonstration session.

Existing staff would be evaluated on compliance, discretion, and “role clarity.”

Alexander frowned.

“What does that have to do with Sofia?”

“I don’t know.”

Rachel hesitated.

“But Veronica joked that Sofia needed role clarity more than anyone.”

Rebecca documented it.

Still not proof.

But the phrase connected the child to the staffing transition months before the dressing-room abuse.

Veronica had not improvised the idea that Sofia belonged below her.

She had been building that hierarchy for some time.
