Chapter 14

The Maison Privé Chicago expansion collapsed.

Not the entire company.

That would have been unrealistic.

The parent business continued operating in other markets.

But its Chicago launch lost financing after the flagship contract disappeared and investigators examined how revenue projections had been presented to the lender.

The local director was fired.

Several employees cooperated.

A settlement eventually reimbursed the Vaughn household for costs tied to the forged authorizations and security failures.

Veronica’s referral and equity agreements were terminated.

Her professional reputation suffered badly.

But Alexander refused every suggestion that he publicly destroy her.

No leaked photographs of Sofia.

No dressing-room images.

No humiliating press campaign.

“No child becomes publicity,” he told Rebecca.

The criminal process surrounding the treatment of Sofia ended more quietly than gossip predicted.

Veronica accepted responsibility under an agreement that included probation, required counseling, parenting/child-safety education despite having no parental role, community service, and a protective order prohibiting contact with Sofia.

The digital authorization conduct remained tied primarily to Maison Privé personnel who had actually created and transmitted the fake emails.

Consequences matched evidence rather than Alexander’s anger.

That mattered to him now.

Evelyn officially retired from full-time work shortly afterward.

Her replacement was a forty-seven-year-old professional household manager named Diane Parker.

Evelyn disliked her for approximately three days.

Then approved.

“She labels everything.”

“So do you.”

“Not like this.”

Alexander smiled.

Evelyn retained one afternoon a week with Sofia.

Paid only when she performed actual childcare.

Otherwise she came as family friend.

The distinction mattered to her.

On her final full-time day, Sofia gave her a drawing.

Three figures holding hands.

Alexander.

Sofia.

Evelyn.

No Veronica.

No servants.

No shoes.

Evelyn cried.

Sofia became confused.

“Bad picture?”

“No.”

Evelyn hugged her.

“Very good picture.”

Alexander stood in the doorway.

His house had survived.

May you like

But not unchanged.

He was beginning to understand that survival without change would have meant learning nothing.
