Chapter 11

Edmund’s thirty days passed.

Three men contacted him with threats.

Not twenty.

Not armies.

Three.

Fear had grown larger than reality over seven protected years.

I quietly prevented one immediate attack because ending protection did not mean inviting murder.

The other two were handled through neutral intermediaries.

Edmund sold the large estate.

Moved into a smaller property under his own security.

Paid for himself.

He hated it.

Then adapted.

Interesting.

Without my name, he had to negotiate.

Apologize.

Repay one old debt.

Abandon another claim.

Actual adulthood at sixty-two.

Jessamine visited him often.

At first, every conversation ended with him blaming me.

Then less.

One afternoon she asked:

“Did Father ever thank you?”

I thought.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“First year.”

“After?”

Not much.

That bothered her.

Good.

Gratitude is not lifelong submission.

But forgetting the original gift entirely is another kind of distortion.

Edmund had eventually treated protection as natural climate.

Not favor.

Then entitlement feels like loss when reality returns.

Jessamine began understanding why my sentence at dinner mattered.

You just spent your father’s last favor.

Not because a literal counter hit zero.

Because her behavior revealed what the favor had become inside their minds.

May you like

A license.

Once I saw that, it could not continue.
