Chapter 14

The rotating council became annoying.

Success.

Men argued.

Women argued.

Younger captains questioned older ones.

No permanent seats.

Silas hated being excluded.

Fine.

One meeting, a junior manager told me my warehouse decision was stupid.

Everyone froze.

I asked why.

He explained.

He was right.

I changed it.

Afterward Graham Pike said:

“So this is what you wanted?”

“No.”

I smiled.

“This is what I needed.”

Leadership that cannot hear disagreement eventually manufactures conspiracies.

That did not excuse Edmund or Silas.

But it gave me responsibility too.

I had built a room where people feared losing status for challenging me.

They built another room.

The answer was not surrendering authority.

It was making disagreement cheaper than betrayal.

Simple.

Difficult.

Worth it.
