Chapter 13

My relationship with Jessamine restarted slowly.
Not engagement.
Not yet.
Dinner.
Conversation.
Arguments without rings.
She hated uncertainty.
Then learned to survive it.
One night she said:
“I spent my whole life watching Father ask whether we were safe.”
That explained much.
Safety became obsession.
Then status.
If Edmund was protected, they were safe.
If Leopold loved Jessamine, safer.
If engagement became marriage, permanent.
If staff obeyed her, proof she belonged.
Every insecurity converted into control.
“I thought marrying you meant nobody could make us small again.”
I looked at her.
“And Nerissa?”
Jessamine closed her eyes.
“I made her small first.”
There.
Understanding.
Not enough alone.
But necessary.
She started working independently from her father.
No Rothwell title through me.
No position.
She managed one charitable foundation outside family operations.
Not because redemption requires charity.
Because she needed something not inherited from Edmund or borrowed from me.
