Chapter 3

Seven years earlier, Edmund saved my life.

That was the story everyone knew.

A winter dinner.

Mountain road.

Ambush planned by men from three rival crews.

Edmund reached me forty minutes before I left.

Told me the road was compromised.

Changed my route.

Six attackers waited in snow for a car that never came.

One warning.

One life.

I gave him one favor.

My protection if he ever needed it.

Three months later, he did.

His own partners learned he warned me.

They called him traitor.

He came to my gate with Jessamine, then twenty-one, and asked for sanctuary.

I gave it.

No crews.

No independent faction.

No political table.

Live safely.

Stay neutral.

Those were the terms.

For seven years, Edmund honored them.

Or appeared to.

Jessamine had been raised inside that protection.

My guards at her father’s gates.

My name discouraging old enemies.

My people solving threats before they reached his door.

Somewhere along the way, gratitude became expectation.

Then expectation became entitlement.

I looked at her.

“How long has your father been meeting Silas?”

She stared.

“I don’t know.”

Lie.

I did not need anger to hear it.

“What did he promise Silas?”

“No idea.”

Another.

Then Graham Pike spoke.

“Representation.”

I turned.

He sighed.

“Edmund thinks you’ve removed too many older voices.”

Of course.

Always older voices.

The mysterious endangered species that somehow owns every table.

Silas wanted a new advisory body.

No official authority.

At first.

Six senior men.

Edmund would chair it because he existed outside my normal hierarchy but inside my protection.

Perfect.

Protected by Leopold.

Independent from Leopold.

Then Jessamine married me.

Edmund would become father-in-law to the sitting boss.

Untouchable twice.

I almost laughed.

Jessamine whispered:

“He only wants stability.”

I looked at her.

“Did he tell you to say that?”

She flinched.

There.

Edmund had not merely accepted my favor.

He had built a political strategy around the assumption I would never revoke it.

Tonight his daughter had finally tested whether that assumption extended to her.

It didn’t.
