Chapter 2

I emptied the ballroom slowly.

No panic.

No speeches.

Guests were dismissed table by table while my men quietly kept six people behind.

Jessamine.

Her cousins.

Two older associates.

And the man who had been sitting nearest those empty chairs.

Graham Pike.

A retired captain with an irritating habit of pretending age made disloyalty philosophical.

Nerissa and Piers stayed only because I asked whether they wanted to.

Piers shook his head.

Nerissa said:

“Five minutes.”

Her choice.

Good.

“What did you see?”

She held her son tightly.

Earlier that afternoon, she carried fresh linens through the east dining corridor.

The ballroom doors were open.

Edmund stood inside.

Jessamine beside him.

And across the table—

Silas Vane.

The man I removed from Rothwell operations eight months earlier after he started collecting private loyalty from younger crews.

Not money.

Promises.

Worse.

“Anyone else?”

Nerissa nodded.

“Three men.”

Names?

She knew only one.

Graham Pike.

I looked at him.

He did not deny it.

“Why the empty chairs?”

Nerissa said Jessamine ordered staff to leave them untouched during dinner.

“For Father and Mr. Vane.”

Jessamine snapped:

“She misunderstood.”

Nerissa flinched.

Piers tightened his arms.

I noticed.

So did Jessamine.

Good.

She had finally seen what her voice did to a child.

I looked at her.

“No interruptions.”

Then back to Nerissa.

“What did they say?”

She heard only fragments.

Edmund:

“After the wedding, Leopold can’t remove protection without insulting his own wife.”

Silas:

“Then we rebuild quietly.”

And Jessamine:

“Once I’m inside the family, he’ll have to tolerate Father.”

There.

The engagement was not the conspiracy.

But it was being used as insurance for one.

Jessamine stepped forward.

“My father is in danger.”

“He has been under my protection.”

“Because you owe him.”

One word.

Owe.

Everything in her face said she believed that debt had no expiration.

I stood.

“Your father received sanctuary.”

Then pointed toward Piers.

“He did not receive ownership of my house.”

Jessamine looked at the ring.

Finally, I understood what she thought it meant.

May you like

Not marriage.

Immunity.
