Chapter 18 - MARCUS TELLS ME THE TRUTH

Marcus asked to meet me two years after the incident.

Neutral office.

No bodyguards inside.

Anthony nearby.

He had been working for a regional development company in Philadelphia.

No Bellini title.

No Harborline role.

He looked older.

Good suits still.

Less performance.

“I hated you.”

I smiled.

“Opening strong.”

He did not.

“Since I was sixteen.”

“Why sixteen?”

That was when Arturo took me to Italy for a hotel acquisition and Marcus stayed home.

I barely remembered.

He did.

“Uncle Arturo told me he couldn’t bring both.”

“Probably true.”

“I thought he chose his son.”

“He did.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Yes.”

There was no point lying.

Then:

“I spent years telling myself it was because you were older, because you were CEO track, because I had my own father.”

“Your father was dead.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

“Sofia tried to make it equal.”

My mother.

“Yes.”

“Arturo didn’t.”

That hurt because it was partly true.

My father loved Marcus.

He did not love him identically.

Families promise equality when what they usually mean is:

We will try not to make difference cruel.

Sometimes difference still hurts.

Then Marcus said:

“Harbor Crown felt like the first thing that could be mine before it was yours.”

“It wasn’t mine.”

“I know that now.”

Then:

“When Arturo blocked it, I stopped seeing him as the man who raised me.”

“What did you see?”

“The last person choosing you.”

There.

Not Harbor Crown.

Not seven million.

Those mattered.

Underneath:

A boy still watching an uncle leave for Italy with his son.

I understood.

No absolution.

Then Marcus said:

“I took the watch because Sofia was the only one who made me feel like I wasn’t second.”

That one nearly broke me.

“Then you stole her gift from him.”

“Yes.”

He cried.

May you like

I let him.

Adults should carry their own tears sometimes.
