Chapter 6 - THE TROPHY ROOM

Marcus chose the trophy room deliberately.

We learned that from security footage.

No audio inside the room because the family had resisted microphones around private historical displays.

Cameras only.

At 4:12 P.M., Marcus entered alone.

At 4:16, Arturo came in using his cane.

Why?

Marcus had asked him to look at a restored bronze maritime trophy before it returned to display.

Plausible.

Marcus’s own glass case stood along the west wall.

His awards.

A development prize.

A hospitality leadership medal.

Two charity cups.

A framed magazine cover naming him one of the city’s forty under forty.

His version of family legitimacy.

Then footage showed Marcus placing a folder on a small table.

Arturo opened it.

Read.

Shook his head.

Marcus pointed.

Arturo closed the folder.

Marcus stepped between him and the door.

Not blocking completely.

Pressuring.

Then the watch.

Marcus reached for Arturo’s wrist.

My father pulled back.

Marcus took it anyway.

No audio.

Then the cane.

Arturo tried to move past.

Marcus snatched it.

Threw it.

My father dropped to one knee.

That was when I heard the cane strike the carpeted display base.

The rest I had seen.

Then the folder.

Security preserved it after Marcus left.

Inside:

VOLUNTARY RELINQUISHMENT OF HERITAGE CONSENT SHARE.

Plain language.

Arturo would remain shareholder.

Keep all economic interests.

Retain honorary Founder Emeritus status.

But permanently surrender the special Harbor Crown approval right.

Why permanent?

Because Marcus’s lawyers? Not company lawyers. He had hired personal counsel to draft it.

Could Arturo legally sign?

Probably, subject to board and company counsel review.

Had the company authorized Marcus to solicit?

No.

Then attached cover note:

Uncle, this removes unnecessary pressure and lets the family move forward without anyone questioning your health.

There.

The threat was soft.

Sign voluntarily and no one needs to discuss incapacity.

Do not sign, and health becomes the issue.

Anthony looked at the sentence.

“That is ugly.”

“Coercion?”

“Potentially. Context matters.”

Then the next page.

A list titled:

CAPACITY CONCERNS.

Missed Harbor meeting.

Lost anniversary watch.

Misplaced cane.

Confused Anthony with Albert.

Canceled specialist evaluation.

Hospitalization.

I stared.

Lost anniversary watch.

Marcus had taken it.

Misplaced cane.

At least once Marcus had moved it.

He was using problems he helped create as evidence of incapacity.

The room became colder.

Then one handwritten note at the bottom:

If voluntary route fails, invoke Section 8.4.

Section 8.4.

The incapacity clause.

There were the two paths.
