Chapter 26 - THE TROPHY ROOM OPENS

Villa Bellini’s trophy room eventually became a private family-history gallery open during foundation events.

Not public museum.

Controlled tours.

Old bronze trophies remained.

So did uncomfortable records.

Photographs from the legitimate shipping era.

Photographs from periods when family businesses were not so legitimate.

Court clippings.

Restaurant menus.

Women’s correspondence.

Workers.

Immigrant history.

No sanitizing everything into heroic Mafia folklore.

Marcus’s repaired display case became a section titled:

BELLINI REDEVELOPMENT, 1990–2030.

His old awards appeared beside photographs of Harbor Crown after redevelopment.

Not erased.

Not worshipped.

Arturo’s wooden cane?

I kept it for years.

Then the curator asked whether it belonged in the exhibit.

“No.”

“Why?”

“It was his mobility aid.”

Not heritage.

Not symbol.

A cane.

I donated it to an adaptive-equipment charity after confirming they could use or recycle it appropriately.

Some cousin called that disrespectful.

May you like

I ignored him.

Objects had ruled us long enough.
