The hidden camera became the story in newspapers once court filings referenced it.
That annoyed investigators.
Because cameras create false expectations.
People thought:
Footage means case over.
No.
It showed:
Marcella locking Elowen in the cellar repeatedly.
Her moving donor items.
Her handling documents.
Her placing at least two objects into personal bags.
It did not show:
Every theft.
Intent for every document.
Where every missing item went.
What she said during footage without usable audio.
Whether some objects were legitimately transferred.
Financial investigators still needed:
Consignment records.
Donor statements.
Foundation inventory logs.
Bank records.
Emails.
Authentication.
The child-endangerment case relied on:
Video.
Elowen’s statements.
Physical items in the cellar.
My discovery.
Other household witnesses.
Marcella’s admissions.
The fraud case relied on separate records.
That separation protected both from becoming melodrama.
Miriam explained:
“One camera can point. It should not become the whole prosecution.”
I understood intellectually.
Emotionally, I wanted the image of Marcella turning the key to become enough.
